January 2015 Video Game Sales Results

The NPD Group has released its retail report for the month of January. While software sales were up year-over-year in January, hardware sales were down 23%. Overall, total industry sales were down 5% to $625.7 million. PlayStation 4 ended Xbox One’s two-month win streak as the best selling platform, and remains the cumulative leader. Xbox One had its best January ever and more game sales per console than any other platform, while sales of Wii U hardware and software increased by nearly 30% and 45%, respectively, over the same month last year.

In January 2015, Dying Light had the highest first month of sales for new IP in the survival-horror genre, exceeding the previous record, The Evil Within, which launched in October 2014.

The top selling games of January were as follows:

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D in Stores Tomorrow

Nintendo today announced that The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D will be available in stores nationwide beginning tomorrow, February 13th, alongside the release of the new Nintendo 3DS XL.

While the game is playable on any Nintendo 3DS system, players that pick up New Nintendo 3DS XL can experience The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D with added features, like the ability to control the camera with the C Stick and experiencing the game’s remastered graphics using the new face-tracking 3D technology built into the new system.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation Coming this Summer

Idea Factory today announced that Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation will hit Summer 2015, exclusively on the PlayStation Vita in both retail and digital formats. It will also be compatible with PlayStation TV. A remake of Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory for the PlayStation 3, this new version features more story, more scenarios, and extra heapings of fourth-wall-breaking comedy. The game will also include dual audio, with Japanese audio available as free DLC.

XSEED Games Announces Lord of Magna, Confirms Story of Seasons Release Date

XSEED Games announced today that the strategy RPG adventure, Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven, is in production for the Nintendo 3DS and set to see its English-language debut this spring. In tandem, the company also confirmed that Story of Seasons, the latest iteration in the farming/life-sim series, will see a release on March 31st exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in both physical and digital forms. The game will retail for $39.99, and participating retailers are offering a special Angora rabbit “pocket plushie” as a pre-order bonus while supplies last.

Sega’s Second Annual ‘Make War Not Love’ Competition

Sega presents the rematch of the heavyweight strategy gaming contest, with Total War: Rome II and Company of Heroes 2 communities going head to head in the second annual ‘Make War Not Love’ competition. This Valentine’s Day weekend, the two communities will compete in consecutive three hour rounds. Every in-game victory will count towards that side’s tally for the round and the community that wins the most rounds will earn some free DLC for players of the respective game.

Battle commences at 1:00pm EST today and blows will be traded until 1:00pm EST on February 15th. During this time, both games will be available to play for free via Steam.

If Company of Heroes 2 wins, an assortment of premium skins and commanders worth around $20 will become available to download for free from 1:00pm EST on February 16th until 1:00pm EST on February 18th.

If Total War: Rome II lands the knockout blow, the Black Sea Colonies Culture Pack will be made available for free from 1:00pm EST on February 15th until 1:00pm EST on February 17th. The previously unannounced Longbeards Culture Pack for Total War: Attila will also be free for a day when it launches in late February.

3D Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros. Released on Nintendo 3DS eShop

Sega announced today that 3D Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros., part of the second series of classic titles re-mastered exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, is now available download in the Nintendo eShop.

Sega will release 3D Out Run, 3D Fantasy Zone II, and 3D Thunder Blade for Nintendo 3DS in the coming months.

Harold Races Onto Steam

Indie developer Moon Spider Studio announced today that its platforming racing game, Harold, is now available on PC via Steam for the special launch price of $14.99, 25% off its standard price of $19.99.

Harold is about a not-quite-infallible runner competing in a celestial marathon of absurdly complex obstacle courses. As the guardian angel unfortunately assigned to watch over Harold, players must use their heavenly powers to manipulate the world’s many hazardous obstacles, delay the other racers and catapult this underdog (sometimes literally) to victory.
