Journey Sweeps 2013 GDC Awards

thatgamecompany’s Journey won six awards at last night’s 13th annual GDC Game Developers Conference, including Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Visual Arts, Best Downloadable Game, the Innovation Award, and the Game of the Year Award.

Additionally, Bethesda and Arkane Studios’ Dishonored won the inaugural Audience Award category after thousands of votes were cast for the honor.

BioWare founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk were honored for their contributions to the video game industry with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Spacewar! creator Steve Russell was honored with the Pioneer Award for his work on the multiplayer space title. Chris Melissinos, the creator and guest curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum˜s “The Art of Video Games” was presented with the Ambassador Award for his efforts on the exhibition.

Richard Hofmeier’s Cart Life took home the Seumas McNally Grand Prize award at the Independent Games Festival hosted by the GDC. In addition to the grand prize, Cart Life was a multi-award winning title, securing the Nuovo Award for abstract and unconventional games as well as the Best Narrative Award. Additionally FTL: Faster Than Light by Subset Games won multiple categories taking the Audience Award and Excellence in Design Award.
