This 2D version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (GRAW 2) is pretty different, to say the least, from its console and PC counterparts. GRAW 2, however, takes place in the same place; in and around the Mexican border where the United States is currently building fences to keep illegal immigrants out. However, the year is 2014, and the Ghosts have been sent as more than simple police force. You'll have to fight behind enemies to stop a Mexican insurgency.

Some of the features that GRAW 2 introduced for other platforms also appears in this top down action game. For example, if you lean up against cover, you'll automatically hide behind it so you can safely shoot down enemies without taking (too) much fire. You'll also encounter some friendly troops whom you'll have to cover for while they do their work. One instance has you defending a friendly while he disarms a tripwire. But there's nothing too serious in terms of tactics. This is primarily a run and gun action game in the vein of Metal Gear.

What I found interesting about this game is the amazing amount of firepower available. Not only will you be dodging countless turrets (which I don't remember being on the Xbox 360 when playing it), you'll also have to fight mechanized robots and armored vehicles. The latter I understand. Robots – I really do not. It sounds more like something to come out of Metal Gear than from the more realistic GRAW 2. The mobile version also includes a rail shooter stage where you get to target bad guys in a humvee. Again these seem pretty uncharacteristic of Ghost Recon.

The sneak and silent aspects of Splinter Cell can be found scattered throughout the levels but it's not implemented very well. You never get a good idea from the top down perspective the line of sight of the enemies especially since most of the game is during the daytime. And if you screw up, expect to be pelted by all manner of automatic machine gun fire. While killing enemies crouched behind a barrel is easier than shooting them after they're on alert, it's sometimes easier to take the more direct approach.

Speaking of easy, GRAW 2 is not structured like Gameloft's Splinter Cell series. There are specific checkpoints in the game to save your progress but these are too few and far in between. One time I kept dying before a set piece, only to realize once I was after that piece (and about three other screens), it was a hop skip or jump before the end of the level. The checkpoints could be spaced out better. One of the nice things I liked about Splinter Cell was how it didn't punish me for making a trivial mistake. It seems GRAW 2 has a mean streak in this department.

If you're expecting a tactical shooter experience out of this, you might be better off sticking with Rainbow. This is an action game through and through, dressed up with the Ghost Recon name.
