What happens when you’ve saved the world numerous times over from a lethal virus (including your partner), survived being declared a traitor by your own government and even managed your own intelligence agency? If you’re Gabe Logan, it’s just another day at the office. Across two separate consoles, Sony’s ultra-spy has helped define the stealth action genre. Now, Logan’s team of intelligence agents is being called back into service in a new adventure for the PSP. Suit up, because we’re going on black ops with Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. The two level demo of Dark Mirror that we received showed off only sparse glimpses of the story, but confirmed that Gabe, his field partner Lian and his intel officer Teresa all return for this new counter terrorism fight against a paramilitary group called Red Section. Apparently, these militarized goons have taken over an oil refinery in Alaska and are threatening to destroy the Alaskan Oil Pipeline and much of its surrounding environment. What their reasons for committing this potentially devastating eco-attack is still unknown, but Gabe and Lian deploy themselves at the outskirts of the refinery just as the hired thugs trip a valve to potentially cause a pressure explosion with the heating vents. It’s up to Gabe and Lian to stop the thugs, protect the refinery and eliminate the terrorist threat.
One of the things that the Syphon Filter series has always done well has been a good mix of action elements and mission tasks to break up any game monotony that could set in from the “kill the terrorist” formula found in other espionage games. For instance, one feature of the mission forced you to protect Lian from incoming enemies as she tries to send you a zip line across a courtyard. Another one forced you to find a power circuit to restore electricity to a computer so you could download vital information off a critical computer. While learning the control scheme for the PSP initially appears daunting for dual analog stick veterans, it only takes some practice to get used to switching between guns and gadgets. For instance, the face buttons controls directional aim, while item selection is based off of the directional pad. Many of the guns that Gabe has available to him on missions, such as the sniper rifle or the submachine guns have different ammunition types, such as explosive or gas rounds, and you’ll be able to pick up more as each mission goes on. You’ll also have a number of gadgets available to you, such as infrared and night vision goggles to maneuver around your environment. One thing that Dark Mirror has over some of the previous Syphon Filter titles is an increase in graphical quality. Gabe and Lian have more facial details than the previous titles, and realistically express scowls and other emotional shifts in their demeanor. It also appears that the original voice actors return to reprise their roles for the main characters, which is a nice touch; however, watch who you’ll let play this title, because there’s plenty of strong language scattered throughout the game. We’re looking forward to shattering the bad luck of the Dark Mirror when the game ships this spring. Check back soon for a full review!
