Ever since 2001, the Jak franchise has effectively supplanted Crash Bandicoot as the unofficial mascot of the PS2. Thanks to solid platforming, rich gameplay and an engrossing story, the series provided a hero/anti-hero that players could care for. It also provided a large dose of comic relief in the diminutive furry feet of Daxter, Jak’s friend and sidekick. Now, finally after three platformers and a racing game, Daxter is getting his turn to shine in his own title. Welcome back to Haven City and the wisecracks of Daxter for the PSP. The story of the duo is well known, particularly the teleportation to Haven City and the capturing of Jak by Baron Praxis’ men shortly thereafter. Daxter managed to escape from the Baron’s men, swearing to rescue his friend. According to the story of Jak II, the ottsel finally liberated his friend after two years, only to discover how much torture Jak had suffered. The PSP title attempts to fill in the blanks in those two missing years, explaining just what took Daxter so long to save his friend. Apparently, from what we’ve seen in our preview, it took a large number of tall tales in a bar, quite a few drinks, and a job to put him on the right track. Two years after Jak’s been kidnapped, Daxter is no closer to rescuing Jak than he was when he arrived in Haven City. One night, after regaling another pub with his tales of “heroism,” Daxter is approached with a job offer to exterminate pests – particularly bugs, although you’ll wind up taking on other menaces later on. While the bug job seems relatively straightforward, the bug infestations seem to have more going on than meets the eye, as you’ll wind up saving the business from being closed down, meet an attractive rebel, and many other plot twists and turns.
As part of his bug elimination duties, Daxter is given an electric bug smasher that he can splatter bugs with. You can create small combos with this swatter, and even perform power swings to squish the insects, or lightly glide to earth in a circular motion. Daxter does happen to have a double jump like his taller counterpart, but he won’t be wielding smaller firearms in this title to take care of the really mean pests. That honor goes to a bug spray canister, which can be used to stun his targets for free hits from the swatter. It can also be used as a propellant for a short while across distances, and even turned into an impromptu flamethrower to destroy obstacles in your way. Ground movement won’t always restrict Daxter either; there are a number of vehicles scattered throughout the platform-based missions that you’ll take over and race through different environments. All the while, you’ll be collecting various orbs that will probably play a large role in unlocking secrets for the game. While not entirely kept a secret in the demo, one mini-game like mission featured Daxter imagining himself a la Neo in The Matrix Reloaded (Burly Brawl, anyone?), replete with trenchcoat and sunglasses. To fend off incoming opponents, you had to press the corresponding button in time. Tasks like this make gameplay seem varied and appropriate to the Jak and Daxter universe. While there were some frame drops here and there via the cutscenes, for the most part Daxter captures the visual look of the console games themselves. Closeups of the ottsel really shows off how fuzzy Daxter really is, and many of the character models feel pulled directly from one of the PS2 titles. What’s more, everything about him oozes sarcasm, such as his stationary animations of going into the crane position when you leave him alone for too long. Plus, you’ve still got the wisecracks that only Max Casella can produce. This should fit right in with the Jak franchise, which is a good thing since it also features PS2 interconnectivity to unlock new secrets in Jak X: Combat Racing. While we’ve only scratched the surface of this title, we’re sure that the sardonic sidekick will scratch us back as Daxter prepares for its March release. Check back soon for a full review!
