Product: Cellboost Manufacturer: Compact Power Systems Retail Price: From $4.99 USD Date of Availability: Now Available Those who have ever been stuck in a blackout know how essential electricity is to every day life in first world countries. With so many handhelds, cellular phones and gadgets floating around, the same can be said for these devices too. Not too long ago, you could always stroll down to a 7/11 to pick up some batteries for your Palm Pilot or your Game Boy but with the advent of lithium batteries that avenue has become a dead end. And then your convenient handheld gadgets are no longer so convenient without any power.
That’s where Compact Power System’s Cellboost steps in, a company that pioneered providing extra power to cellular phones and other mobile devices. (You can tell from the name which device it made its bones on) Now it’s turning its sights on the gaming community with the Game Boy Advance SP and DS. The Cellboost is a small lightweight battery that plugs into SP or DS models to do two things. First, it can charge the battery so you can use the machine without Cellboost later on. Alternatively, it can provide power while charging the gaming unit. This is useful when you’re in the middle of playing and you don’t want to put the game down. Cellboost can be used at any time with the device on or off. The Cellboost device is versatile enough that you don’t need to expend the entire battery every time you use it. In fact, you can use it to partially charge the device or top off whatever you managed to charge at home. It is a little inconvenient in that you don’t really know how much battery power is left in the Cellboost, although the product's website boasts a six hour run time. However, the Cellboost is cheap. Priced at $4.99 US, keeping a few in your travel bag is not going to put a dent on the pocket. In fact, if you consider all the rechargeable batteries, lithium batteries and even plain alkalines, the Cellboost is fairly competitive. The only drawback is the slightly larger size. Paired with a DS, the Cellboost doesn’t look too bulky at all but when you use it with an SP model, the Cellboost can look pretty big in comparison. Compare this with the sleek battery for the PSP and you’ll see what we mean. When the Cellboost has expended its useful life, disposal is simple since you can easily toss it in the trash. If you look at the fine print on most batteries, you’ll see scary hazardous messages about dumping them in the trash. It’s everyone’s hope that the Cellboost you’re tossing in the trash is biodegradable and environmentally friendly. With energy shortages a growing problem in society these days, the Cellboost becomes an ever more valuable product. Parents will find it affordable to grab a few when they’re about to go on the family road trip or on lengthy flights. Gaming aficionados will never have to worry about their game going dark on them again.
