GO Review: Sim City 3000 Unlimited
- Jove
While this addon contains many new features it seems as though they don't live up to a very high standard. However Sim City 3000 Unlimited may be welcome by a Sim City Addict. Here's an excerpt from our review:
"Maxis did not skimp when they decided to release an add-on for their hugely selling title Sim City 3000, in that they did not only include new tile sets and cities, but also a building editor and a scenario editor. The editors seem to be ports of what the original designers who worked on developing the scenarios, buildings, and cities for Sim City 3000 would have used, but they have a lack-luster feel to them, in that they don't seem like consumer level products, but rather something more intended for a developer.
"

GO Preview: The Rift
- Jimmy Clydesdale
The Rift, a new 3D real-time strategy game in the vein of Homeworld, is being developed by Thrushwave Technology.
It boasts an advanced and intuitive navigation system and extremely tense space combat. Here's a little blurb:
"Graphically, there are some nice bump maps on the alien creatures, asteroids and planets that populate The Rift. This allows for a lower
polygon count, but great visuals. For example, although the planets have a very low polygon count, the bump map makes it appear to
look like a perfect sphere with many polygons."
Be sure to check out the rest of our thoughts and exclusive screenshots in this hands-on preview. Enjoy!

GO Review: Tachyon The Fringe
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Although full of potential, Tachyon lacks the finer details that normally determine an epic space struggle. Here's a
little blurb from our review:
"In Taychon, vast distances of space can be traveled via the Taychon gates. Flying into one of these gates allows
you to somehow teleport to another sector. The supplies that allow these gates to work is what the corporation
and the fringes are feuding over. The flight model of Taychon is very basic. It does not give a true feel of what a
space simulator should be. The style of gameplay Taychon exhibits is a traditional arcade shooter game. One
interesting feature of this game is the ability to slide. The slide maneuver keeps your ship heading the same way,
however you are free to rotate. This becomes very effective if there is an enemy ship following behind you. You
can continue to head one direction, but turn your ship around to attack."
Be sure to check out the rest of our Tachyon review including a space probe full of visuals. Enjoy!

GO Review: New York Times Crosswords
- Jimmy Clydesdale
WizardWorks has compiled more than one thousand crossword puzzles from the New York Times. You'd think all that effort
could have been put into some original content, but it's all good. Here's a little blurb from our review:
"The New York Times Crossword Puzzles features over a thousands puzzles from, you guessed it, the New York Times.
Granted they are older puzzles, ranging in date from the late 80's to the most recent one, which is dated 1994, I
suppose that means nobody will remember the solutions to them. The entire collection is listed in chronological
order so you can mark your spot when you close up shop. There's no random puzzle generator, a feature that
certainly would have been welcome, but with as many puzzles as there is in New York Times Crossword Puzzles, it
shouldn't be much of an issue."
Be sure to check out the rest of our New York Times Crossword Puzzles review including a 24 Across full of visuals. Enjoy!

SimCity 3000 Unlimited Ships
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Electronic Arts
today announced the release of SimCity 3000 Unlimited, the definitive version of
1999's best-selling game, SimCity 3000. The new title, available for PCs, features all the great gameplay of the original game plus several new
features including two completely new building sets, thirteen challenging scenarios, a scenario creator, new disasters, customizable terrain, seasonal
city events and a new tool for users to create their own buildings.
One of the most visually stunning features of SimCity 3000 Unlimited is the addition of two entirely new sets of buildings: Asian and European. Hundreds
of new buildings, from the red-tiled roofs and windmills of a Dutch farming village to the glass skyscrapers and pagodas of Tokyo, combined with the
original game's North American building set give players a worldwide selection of options as they create their ideal cities.
While SimCity 3000 is famous for its open-ended, no winning or losing gameplay style, there are many players, especially casual gamers, who enjoy
the challenge of reaching a specific goal. For those players, SimCity 3000 Unlimited comes packed with over a dozen scenarios. Virtual mayors can fight
crime and corruption in Moscow, reunite East and West Berlin and rebuild a city after an ecological disaster. Players can even create their own
scenarios with the new SimCity Scenario Creator and trade these over the Internet.
Top on the list of fan requests were more disasters to torment their resident Sims with, so SimCity 3000 Unlimited delivers four new disasters in
addition to all of the hair-raising calamities from the original. Whirlpools sink ships pulling into harbors. Flaming pieces of space junk fall from the
sky. Green toxic clouds deliver building-dissolving acid rain on areas of heavy pollution. And plagues of locust descend upon farmlands.
Other new features include the new Building Architect Plus tool that allows players to model their own homes or imaginary buildings and see them in
their games. Players now have the freedom to create the perfect setting for their cities with terrain they can edit. And in SimCity 3000 Unlimited,
cities can experience holidays and seasonal events such as a winter ice skating rink, fireworks stands for the Fourth of July, a parade for New
Years or Thanksgiving, a haunted house with trick-or-treaters and flowers in the spring.
SimCity 3000 Unlimited is available in stores now for a suggested retail price of US$39.95. Current owners of SimCity 3000
will receive a $10 mail-in rebate.

Tank Platoon is Tanked
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Hasbro Interactive
issued a statement today stating the they have discontinued development on Tank Platoon.
"We had hoped to be able to expand combat simulations beyond the
traditional niche, to broaden their appeal and make them a viable market
for us to participate in. But, what we learned from our recent release of
Gunship!, is that we're challenged to attract the hard core fans and, at the
same time, the more casual gamers. As both Gunship! and Tank Platoon!
shared a common engine and game design, we saw little opportunity to
rectify the situation and made the decision not to move forward with Tank
Platoon!. This is allowing us to focus our development resources on new
projects."

Front Office Football: The College Years
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Solecismic Software
announced a sequel to Front Office Football called Front Office Football: The College Years. In The College Years players assume the role of a head football
coach at a major college. Each year, players will recruit athletes from any of nearly 14,000 public high schools, train them and try to build a
championship caliber college football team.
Long-term success in the game requires players to win championships, keep players grades up, and build a profitable football program through
alumni donations, television revenue and ticket sales.
The College Years is a text-based sports simulation aimed at fans who enjoy the statistical data behind the game as much as they enjoy the
on-field action. The interface focuses on concentrating large amounts of data about each team and athlete into lists and charts. The game
simulation is depicted through play-by-play descriptions of the on-field action. Coaches can optionally view games through a graphical
representation of a stadium scoreboard. The College Years is the sequel to the original Front Office Football, a professional football simulation
released in 1998.
