GO Review: The Ruins of Kunark - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Just when you thought you'd gotten over your addiction to EverQuest, along comes The Ruins of Kunark, an expansion pack that is sure to have adventurers jumping off the wagon. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Also included in the expansion is a new playable race, the Iksar. The Iksar are snarling lizardmen with long tails. They have the ability to regenerate their hit points faster than most other races and have such inherent skills as seeing in the dark as well as running and swimming at extremely quick rates. The Iksar are a predominantly evil race and are despised in Norrath, so adventuring too far can get you in a bit of trouble. Being an evil race, you'll be able to choose between Warrior, Shadow Knight, Necromancer, Monk and Shaman classes. The Iksar race will certainly appeal to both rookie and veteran EverQuest players as it gives veterans the chance to start anew with unknown territories to explore."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Ruins of Kunark review including a locked chest full of visuals. Enjoy!

Quake 3 Arena Addon Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Activision and iD Software today officially announced the development of a QUAKE III Arena add-on. The first to be created at id since the Master Levels for Doom, the expansion will bring advanced team gaming to Q3A's deathmatch experience. The product will debut at E3 this month.

The add-on has fixed a piercing gaze on strategic cooperative team competition. It will feature multiple modes where people maneuver for control of strategic areas and resources within new maps designed for team and tournament competition. In one mode, teams compete for artifacts that appear in the center of the arena when a participant dies. To score, people must transport the artifacts from the center of the arena to the opposing team?s base. In a second mode, teams will have to defend a monument located in their base while firing at the opposing team's monument. The goal is to deplete the hit points of the enemy's monument to zero. When not under assault, the monuments will regenerate hit points.

In addition, the add-on will feature new weapons and power-ups that intensify the combat. In an interesting move, new team power-ups will allow people to acquire class abilities. Combatants can choose to be one of three classes through grabbing a class-specific power-up located at their base. Just one person per team can use one of these power-ups at a time. The effects will last until the character is fragged. Once that happens, the power-up again becomes available to the entire group. These power-ups are located in each team's base. Examples include the "Scout" for increased speed and the "Doubler" for more damage.

Q3A's potent arsenal will be even more lethal in the add-on. The seminal nail gun will reappear in its most heinous incarnation to date, a new proximity mine launcher will allow teams to reinforce strategic locations, and the now infamous chain gun will reduce the opposing team?s forces to chum. To help identify friends and foes, the expansion will allow people to select from different teams, each with their own pre-designed logo and textures. People can further customize their character with new male and female models, each with a number of unique heads to represent different team members. A redesigned menu system will better facilitate game setup, team awareness and in-game communication. Users must have the original Q3A installed to run the add-on.

    Review - Theocracy (c) Ubi Soft - Vince Vega [ GO! ]

GO Interview: Baldur's Gate II - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • The sequel to Baldur's Gate is well on schedule for release this Fall and we've got some inside information on what this RPG has to offer. Here's a little blurb from our interview with the Baldur's Gate II development team:

"Game Over: How will the path finding issues of the original Baldur's Gate be addressed? Will characters have a stronger ability to act autonomously in combat?

Brad: The pathing algorithm has been tweaked considerably, but more importantly we have added the feature of "bumping". Bumping is when a character is blocked by another creature (whether a summoned creature or party member) and is trying to get by it. The blocking creature moves out of the way, the character that wishes to move, moves, and the blocking character then moves back into his/her/its position. It sounds simple, and it is =). Game play is significantly improved when you don't have to worry about your characters wandering about stupidly (and aggravating the entire dungeon while doing it)."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Baldur's Gate II interview including a magic pouch full of visuals. Enjoy!

GO Review: Theocracy - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • After a tumultuous development cycle, the real-time strategy game Theocracy has finally made it's way to stores. Two words: wasted potential. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Once you've completed the tutorial session and learnt the inner workings of the game, you can jump into the action. Unfortunately, jumping into the action that is Theocracy is like jumping off a house and landing on a bicycle minus the seat, neither is particularly enjoyable to say the least."

GO Review: Messiah - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • After numerous delays and much anticipation, Shiny and Interplay have finally unleashed Messiah upon us. How did this third-person action / adventure game turn out? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Shiny, who delivered such classics as Earthworm Jim and MDK, bring us Messiah, a third-person action/adventure title. Those of us who like to keep up with all the gaming gossip and news will most probably have heard of Messiah some time ago. As is the trend in the computer gaming industry, Messiah was plagued by an overly long development time and therefore was delayed enough to cause frustration for those waiting for the game. To be brief, Messiah is an above average game, which has suffered from minor design issues, which, in turn, cause major gameplay problems."

GO Review: Soldier of Fortune - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Soldier of Fortune has been billed as the most "ultra-violent" FPS ever, but is there a quality game behind the violence? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Graphically, SOF is pretty impressive considering it's using the venerable Q2 engine and has to compete with the next-gen engines powering Q3 and UT. Raven has done a pretty commendable job of hiding the limitations of the Q2 engine and making some very nice and memorable levels. The gun models and animations are pretty well done, I especially like the reloading. The player models are decent, the enemies are all quite varied thanks to a feature that allows the same model to use a variety of head textures and clothing textures. I thought it would be a lot more impressive than it actually is though, all the enemies still look pretty similar. One player model that I think looks pretty bad is the person you play. What's with the goofy moustache buddy? If you're trying to create the image of a cool dangerous mercenary, why did you create such a chumpy skin?"

  • Take 2 Interactive today announced it has acquired computer and video game publisher Gathering of Developers. The Gathering will act as an autonomous though 100 percent-owned subsidiary, and continue to publish its games in North America. As a result of this acquisition, the companies will be able to further leverage each other's strengths and expertise, including Gathering's 2000 and 2001 lineup and TAKE 2's worldwide distribution and video game publishing faculties. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The two companies have had a partnership since the Gathering's inception in 1998 when TAKE 2 provided initial funding, European co-publishing capabilities and a North American distribution infrastructure. In January 1999, TAKE 2 became a minority equity partner with a 19.9 percent interest in the Gathering. TAKE 2 has entered into agreements with the Gathering's CEO Michael Wilson and President Harry Miller for five and three years to continue in their current capacities. Gathering's management will remain in place and the Board of Developers will continue to handle product submission evaluations.

    Infiltrator Announced - Seth Gecko
  • Orbital Frog Productions, a new PC game development company, has announced Infiltrator: Shadow Wars, a game of espionage, intelligence gathering, combat and surreptitious tactics set in an online universe. An action-RPG, Infiltrator features a combat system Orbital Frog claims is easy to use and features tremendous depth and possibilities. With more than 150 unique abilities and weapons, gamers must solve complex problems and use cunning tactics to complete their missions.

In Infiltrator, people will have to react fast to an ever-changing environment that contains both human as well as AI opponents. Tom Maugh, CEO of Orbital Frog, said, "We are creating an environment reminiscent of the James Bond movies. All of us at Orbital Frog grew up watching Bond, Mission Impossible and The Avengers. We wanted a game that captured the best of these worlds." The campaigns will therefore be set in an online realmfilled with intricate details. An isometric perspective will give people an expansive view of the world and their surroundings, though Orbital Frog is adding a few twists. Incorporating true line of sight means not seeing what is around the next corner, for instance.

The world of Infiltrator will be further enhanced with the addition of an advanced physics system that delivers realistic interaction between gamers and their surroundings. Digital tacticians will be able to detonate structural supports to obstruct entrances to other areas as well as bring the ceiling down on their opponents. Other possibilities include blasting through debris, using night vision scopes, and combining tools with other devices to complete the missions.

The solo game will feature a story of intrigue and deceit, pitting people against powerful adversaries. Orbital Frog is also promising an interactive online universe that will allow for the missions to be run online as one-on-one, one-on-many or many-vs.-many contests. The results in one mission will affect the entire online world. The game will be supported through Infiltrator Online, an Internet service being designed from the ground up to support the technical requirements of Infiltrator.
