GO Quickie: Imperium Galactica II - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • If you haven't checked out our new features section, I suggest you head on over for a peak. One of the newest features is a first impression of Infogrames' newly acquired title Imperium Galactica II. Here's a quick peak at that quick take.

"Another thing I found extremely annoying was the gamma: everything was far too dark, even with the gamma setting turned way up. The inability for ships to bomb planet surfaces and the lack of colony and ship leaders is another big detriment to Imperium Galactica 2."

Airport 2000 Volume 2 Takes Off - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Wilco Publishing is on deck with Airport 2000 Volume 2, its sensational new scenery for Microsoft Flight Sim 2000 and 98 shipping this week. With seven new airports rendered in you-are-there detail, special night lighting effects, 10 new adventures with fully interactive ATC, and crisper-than-ever graphics using Flight Sim 2000?s Z-buffer technology, the new edition is guaranteed to keep you flying high.

Airport 2000 Volume 2 gives you London Heathrow, Barcelona, Nice Côte d?Azur, Schiphol Amsterdam, Boston Logan, Miami International and Chicago O?Hare, complete with the actual hangars, maintenance buildings and taxiways outside as well as the real restaurants, gates, departure screens, lounges and shops inside each airport. There are also nine new airplanes with instrument panels so faithfully reproduced that you could practically learn to fly on them.

Meanwhile, out on the runway, you get realistic ground markings and major-carrier aircraft taxiing and taking off around you. No more lonely landings at deserted terminals.

Airport 2000 Volume 2 also delivers seven different flight paths from airport to airport, plus three special adventures for owners of Volume 1 that link airports between the two editions. You have to follow real flight procedures to bring your passengers to their destinations, down to triggering the seatbelt and no-smoking signs and calling the cabin crew. You get to battle engine fires and tire blowouts, and you hear all communication from tower to ground and departure control.

Also available on the Airport 2000 Volume 2 CD-ROM is a free upgrade for Wilco?s popular Airport 2000 Volume I that makes it compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000, so you can pick up right where you left off when you retired Flight Simulator 98. The upgrade gives you basic work-together functionality plus a number of extras: a new third runway at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, new navigation aids at Los Angeles International and JFK airports, and new runway textures with more realistic ground markings. It also adds new graphic detail to the static aircraft in Volume 1 and enhances the night light effects on buildings and ground traffic.

Airport 2000 Volume 2 carries an MSRP of $39 (U.S.). The product is available at retailers nationwide including Electronics Boutique, Babbage?s, Micro Center, and others, as well as for purchase via the Wilco Web site. It is fully compatible with both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 and 98. Minimum system requirements include a Pentium 200 MHz and 32MB RAM. A 3D graphics accelerator card is recommended.

GO Review: Urban Operations - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbox Six series continues with Urban Operations, a satisfying expansion pack for Rogue Spear. Here's a little blurb from our review of Urban Operations:

"While only five new missions are included for the campaign play, there are a few new (okay not new, but the classic missions from Rainbow Six) missions to play in multiplayer and the new custom mission option. Yes that's right, there are now custom missions. You can play any of the levels in any different game type. Save the hostages, assault, recon, lone wolf, terrorist hunt, or the new game style option of defend can be played on any of the included levels. Think that last board you played assault on in the campaign would be cool for rescuing hostages? Well go ahead and give it a try. In multiplayer, it adds a little bit more interest for those of you who'd rather kill terrorists than each other, or in the small games when you don't have enough players for free-for-all to be entertaining."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Urban Operations review including a handful of screenshots. Enjoy!

Strategy First gets Sub Titans - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Strategy First has entered a North American publishing agreement with Australian-based developer Ellipse Studios for their upcoming title, Submarine Titans. A futuristic real-time strategy game, Submarine Titans plunges people deep into an immense underwater world where three civilizations are battling for supremacy. In the year 2047, a comet hits the Earth?s surface with such astounding force, life is almost wiped out. Moving into subterranean vaults and undersea installations, several thousand humans escape the blight of the comet.

Over the next century, the human race adapts to their oceanic habitat and evolves into two rival civilizations, one that hungers for dominance over the underwater universe, and a second that will go to any extremes necessary to remain in balance with the Earth. As the opposing sides gather resources and build their forces to prepare for an inevitable clash, an alien race uncoils itself from within a resource-laden crater deep in the ocean. In the year 2115, all three races erupt in a struggle that seems destined to destroy man?s final bid for survival.

Submarine Titans enables people to command one of these civilizations in a range of 3D battlescapes. The environment is divided into five depth levels; gamers and their opponents can hide behind or under the 3D terrain for offensive and defensive maneuvering. According to the developer, people can opt to have the computer assist them with mundane chores so they can concentrate on the areas of the action they most enjoy. With the use of the scenario editor, people can also create their own maps.

Other features include a dual control interface, which gives people the option of controlling individual units or entire groups while planning production and launching assaults. Also included is support for 3D sound, and graphics resolutions ranging from 800x600 to 1280x1024. Up to 24 people, including eight AI opponents and eight spectators, will be able to complete over a LAN and the Internet. Submarine Titans will be distributed through GT Interactive and is scheduled for a summer release.

GO Review: High Heat Baseball 2001 - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001 is the most realistic baseball simulation available for the PC. Unfortunately, with all its various bugs and issues, it continues to be a game you hate to love so much. Here's a little blurb from our review of High Heat Baseball 2001:

"High Heat Baseball 2001 really comes across more like a TV broadcast as well. Action cameras have been added in so you can see some of the big plays up close and personal. There are also a few new "in-between" camera angles added for fielding, pitching and batting, so if you didn't like any of the angles from High Heat 2000, you've got a few new options this time around. Player's now walk up to the batter's box and pictures of their faces are shown on the screen to go along with their stats for the season and the day. After an inning is completed, a little graphic pops up showing the first three batters for the next inning accompanied with their batting statistics so far that game. At the conclusion of each game, the usual stat sheet is presented and the option to view highlights has been added. That's right, you can view what the computer feels are some of the key plays of the game. The entire atmosphere of High Heat 2001 has been improved and it really comes off looking like a television broadcast."

GO Review: Lucky Luke - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Lucky Luke and his sidekick Jolly Jumper are back for more adventures with the villainous Dalton brothers. Perhaps this cowboy should stick to comics. Here's a little blurb from our review of Lucky Luke on the Daltons' Trail:

"You know what, I haven't even touched on the storyline yet, shame on me. Here it is: Lucky Luke is the sheriff of a small western town where the Dalton brothers are causing havoc. Like any good sheriff would do, Luke takes it upon himself to rid the town of these pests and restor?. Zzz? Zzzz? Zzzz."

Freedom: First Resistance Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Red Storm Entertainment today announced its next project, Freedom: First Resistance, a third-person action and adventure game based on Anne McCaffrey?s best-selling Freedom novels. Freedom: First Resistance is scheduled for release during Quarter 4 2000.

In Freedom: First Resistance, a race of aliens called Catteni has invaded Earth, colonizing the planet in a matter of days. All organized defenses have been smashed, every human government and standing military has been destroyed, and the planet's major cities have been reduced to smoldering ruins. The global economy has collapsed, and the vast majority of the survivors dwell in refugee camps--not to mention that millions have vanished. Earth is ruled at the hand of the Provisional Authority, humans who administrate the planet on behalf of their alien masters. The sole tendril of resistance, a ragged group of freedom fighters, guerillas, and other rag-tag resisters, stands against the Authority and the alien powers behind it.

The resistance has neither numbers nor resources on its side, but it does have the determination of Angel Sanchez, a young freedom fighter. Having lost everything in the invasion, Angel harnesses her anger and gathers a team of rebels to rid Earth of its alien overlords. Through a combination of stealth, combat, puzzle solving, and dialogue, people will guide Angel and members of her team through a series of missions until they face and overcome the aliens. Along the way, the characters interact with both allied and hostile characters, explore the world, and uncover the secrets behind the Catteni domination of Earth.

GO Review: Formula 1 2000 - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • "If it's in the game, it's in the game". EA Sports' Formula 1 2000 seems to give this slogan a whole new meaning, according to our reviewer. Here's a little blurb from our review of Formula 1 2000:

"Upon entering the game I was presented with a stylish menu interface that trademarks all of EA's games. High-res background art, well placed menus and a full set of racing options all rounded out the pre-game experience. So after a brief stop configuring controls and tweaking display settings I jumped right into a test session in one of my favorite tracks, the Japanese GP. And nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.."

GO Review: Croc 2 - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • That cute and cudly little crocodile is back for more adventures in Fox Interactive's sequel, Croc 2. Fun for the kids, but for veteran gamers as well? Here's a little blurb from our review of Croc 2:

"The biggest problem with Croc 2 is the same problem we saw in Earthworm Jim 3D a few months ago, that being the inconceivable camera angles. Although it fares slightly better than Earthworm Jim, the camera positioning continues to provide some extremely awkward views of the action. It roams freely pending the direction Croc's moving in as well as the objects in the vicinity. The end result are views that at times make jumping and navigating near impossible without adjusting the camera manually. Another problem with the game is the relative ease at which I breezed through it. The bosses were less than difficult and even the special events (hang gliding, cart racing) placed throughout the game were less than spectacular moments."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Croc 2 review including a number of visuals. Enjoy!
