GO Hardware Review: Hango Personal Jukebox PJB-100 - Jove
  • Mp3 players too small? Check out the gigantic offering from Hango Electronics. Weighing in at 6gb, the Personal Juke Box is one mean mother, shut your mouth, 'just talkin' bout mp3s. We can dig it. Okay enough of that, just read the review. Here's an excerpt incase you have clicking disorder:

"Portable mp3 devices have now become relatively common high-end electronic devices, with many brands, such as the Diamond Rio, being available at large retail outlets. The problem with all these players is that they are just too small in terms of memory to hold much more than an hour of music, even with flash card upgrades. This is where the Personal Juke Box from Hango Manufacturing steps in. This baby houses an IBM laptop hard drive that holds gigs of mp3s. The model I was supplied with was 4.1gb, but the newer PJB's are all 6gb. That's some serious space. This doesn't come without a price however, with Hango wanting $800 of your hard earned bucks for the PJB. So the question is, if this is somehow in your budget, is it worth getting? Let us find out. "

GO Review: Diablo 2 (c) Blizzard Entertainment - Jove
  • Diablo 2 is one of the most anticipated games ever, and has been at the top of the sales charts week after week. Does it live up to this extreme hype? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"The three prime evils are assembling, and you, along with 2 and half million others, are the only generic hero-type available to save the world from apocalypse. Yes, Blizzard's over-hyped Diablo 2 is now available, but with so much hype one must be careful before buying into the machine. Blizzard is renowned for quality titles, and everyone expects Diablo 2 to continue the trend, but rather than branching, the trend seems to be becoming more of a rut, with Diablo 2 being not only Blizzard's biggest selling game, but also its buggiest. Nevertheless, Diablo's simple, yet effective, hack N' slash mentality is back, with all new character classes and a throng of special items to hunt for. "

    Fatherland Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Snowball Interactive has announced Fatherdale: The Guardians of Asgard, a new RPG/Adventure based on the extensive research and the legends of immortal warrior gods.

Fatherdale: The Guardians of Asgard is an intricate RPG/Adventure where the battle between the Gods and their eternal enemy unfolds in the true medieval world of AD 1072 to be released worlwide in the first half of 2001.

As one of the few immortal Heroes who protect the ancient artifacts of knowledge, you take on the reins of a warlord in a secluded northern valley of Fatherdale just days before it becomes a battlefield of fate to experience a story-driven multi-genre gameplay focused around RPG, RTS and Adventure.

With over hundred and fifty unique characters, thrice that much in hand-crafted inventory items, more than sixty locations in steppes, woods and swamps, on plains, river banks and even inside the wooden Keeps of the Guardians, you have a whole world to explore, protect and die for -- and seven full-fledged Episodes to play through a number of styles and genres before you face your real Enemy.

GO Review: Deus Ex (c) Eidos Interactive - Jove
  • As promised, more high profile games! Genre busting designer Warren Spector is behind Ion Storm's latest offering. Does it continue the trend of disappointing games, or is there some new hope? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"So, does Deus Ex deliver or are we in for another disappointment from Ion Storm? Firstly, I feel Deus Ex has several major problems, and many more minor issues (which will be discussed later) that definitely detract from the overall gaming experience. However, even with glaring mistakes the dynamic game world, where the choices of the player affect the outcome of the game, allows Deus Ex to transcend most of its flaws, and be one of the most engrossing and addictive games of the year. GO Review: Shogun Total War (c) Electronic Arts - Jove
  • I'm sure you have noticed our big gap in reviews over the past month, but this will soon be rectified. Expect several more high profile reviews very soon. Genre merging is becoming a trend in today's gaming world and Shogun tries to follow suit blending turn based strategy with real time combat. Is this mixture successful? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Using a historical backdrop for a game allows a designer to pull from the rich world of human history, and thus it allows a game to have extreme potential to engross the player and bring him into the game's world. Shogun: Total War uses 16th century Japan as its setting, a time of internal conflict where local warlords attempted to conquer each other and gain possession of all of Japan. With such a rich tactical setting, what else could Shogun be but strategy. The twist is that Shogun is both turn based, for general provincial management, and real time, for combat. The approach is not new, but it does lend itself to creating extremely in-depth gameplay, the question is whether or not Shogun makes proper use of this format. "

The Lost Mines Event - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Nexon announced that on July 29th, The Lost Mines will open in their online roleplaying game, Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds. The mines will be made accessible to players for one week. The storyline for the event centers around Beard and Dok, the blacksmiths in the lands of Koguryo. When Beard's hammer wears down so much that it becomes useless the emporer looks for a source to replace Beard's hammer. The only source of plentiful iron can be found in the Lost Mines. So the Emporer makes a decree to open the underground caverns for one week to adventurers of Koguryo and Buya in an effort to replace Beard's tool - for without it, the lands will not have a way to fashion and hone weapons.

GO Review: Submarine Titans (c) Strategy First - Jove
  • Two dimensional real time strategy is coming to an end, and Strategy First attempts to show off the genre with some fanfare. Does it succeed? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Real time strategy (RTS) has become as washed out as first person shooters, with endless mediocre titles streaming onto the store shelves. Recently RTS has begun to "evolve" into fully 3D games, with the old fashioned two dimensional interface and graphics becoming something more of legend than reality. As one of the last 2d RTS titles we are likely to see, Submarine Titans heralds in the end of 2d without much fanfare. Unfortunately, the summer drought is upon us, and there aren't many other recent choices for 2d RTSing. "

Akimbo: Kung-Fu Hero Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Interactive entertainment publisher Iridon Interactive makes a welcome addition to the PC market with Akimbo: Kung-Fu Hero (AKFH), a game with sure mass market appeal that will keep younger players and platform fans entertained for hours.

It's been some time since Donkey Kong Country stormed the market with its combination of cute characters, addictive gameplay and absolute fun," comments Björn Larsson, Sales and Marketing Director of Iridon Interactive. "Now the platform genre, especially on the PC, is fairly vacant, and Akimbo is well timed to hit the market."

AKFH, which has been in production for more than 18 months, is a notoriously stylised title with leanings towards the 2D Donkey Kong format, but with plenty of its own exclusive distinguishing points and innovations. Offering large characters and loads of interaction with both cast and scenery, the game also has an endearing main character, Akimbo.

Set over a wealth of atmospheric locations, the emphasis has been on creating a careful balance between gameplay, fine hand-drawn visuals and a well planned learning curve that draws you back every time for just one more game. A platform challenge in the classic sense, Akimbo is an up-to-the-minute version of the loved school of ?gameplay first? games that are still so popular throughout the world.

    The Story
Akimbo, renowned kung-fu hero discovers a note in a bottle washed up on the beach near his dojo. According to the message, an evil dragon named Fang has enslaved inhabitants of the peaceful Turtle Island. Using black magic, the beast has turned the natives into willing servants who obey his every command. Our hero must set out on the journey of a lifetime to save the people of Turtle Island from the clutches of the evil dragon!

    The Task
Players must guide Akimbo across Turtle Island whilst collecting and assembling fragments of a magical spell that is required to beat Fang. Players will travel through six unique worlds, each with its own theme and filled with monsters, weapons and other collectable items.

Many levels have simple puzzles that players must solve before they can continue on their journey. Battle exquisitely rendered skeleton knights, ghosts, tarantulas, living trees, rhinos, seagulls and jumping clams.

    The Moves
Any platform action game depends on smoothness and easy implementation of the moves available - and Akimbo is the slickest of the slick in this respect. Double jumps, punches, sidekicks, back flips, round house kicks, low kicks, spin downs, and jumping round kick combos will help you battle and puzzle your way through a wealth of colourful levels.

    The Levels
The levels in AKFH are non-linear and are set in six different worlds, such as Caribbean Capers, Spooky Caverns, and The Lost Ruins to name a few. The game offers some intriguing and solid interaction with the scenario - like being able to drop drawbridges, move around up in the trees, climb ropes on fire, unlock mystical doors, be fired from cannons, ride giant turtles, and all that. The confrontations with enemies are kept simple and effective, with speed, dexterity and forward thinking the order of the day!

Akimbo: Kung-Fu Hero is scheduled for an October 2000 release in Europe, initially as a PC only title. Release dates for the rest of the world are pending.

GO Review: KISS Psycho Circus (c) Gathering of Developers - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Based on the comic book series of the same name, KISS: Psycho Circus brings back the classic FPS formula from the days of Doom. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"The level design is extremely linear in The Nightmare Child. Besides a few platform-like elements, each section features the sort of redundant switch and door-based puzzles that we've certainly become accustomed to in the past. The levels remain satisfying enough though due to the large number of enemies you'll face in a single area. They seem to be hiding around every possible corner and moments of silence will be few and far between."

GO Review: Army Men World War (c) 3DO - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Enough already little Billy, put these plastic toy soldiers back into the toy box before you hurt somebody with these things! Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Ok, let's start to pin point where Army Men: World War goes wrong. For starters, the graphics are completely outdated. This particular Army Men title takes place solely in the plastic world, as opposed to the human world, so the game has already lost what little charm it had to begin with."

  • Recent posts on public message forums indicate that Interplay has dismissed the design team behind the space combat simulation, Klingon Academy. While Interplay has yet to comment, such a move would suggest that further support for the game such as bug fixes and new additions, including the mission builder that was set to be released as a free download, will be abandoned.

Get Your Action Out Of My RPG! - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • There was a time when role-playing games for the PC were about as action packed as drying paint. Now everywhere I go, it?s action/RPG this and real-time that. The time has come to say, "Hey, you! Get your action out of my RPG!" Here's a little blurb from this editorial:

"...but Toto, we ain?t in Kansas anymore, and those simple days are gone. Attributes and experience levels aren?t just for RPGs anymore, and button jamming isn?t just for shooters. It?s a topsy-turvy world out there in video game land, and while some of it is good, some of it is very, very bad."

  • Get ready for an absolutely intense, eye-popping arcade shooter from Red Storm Entertainment. Just don't expect too much in terms of substance, this game is all about the flash. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Ok, so it isn't prize-winning material. It's your typical, 'save the universe from the bad guys' plot that we've seen hundreds of times before it. As I've already said though, arcade shooters aren't meant to be thick on plot, they're meant to be action-packed, adrenaline-pumping experiences. Bang! Gunship does well in that respect."

"When you jump into the world of Dracula: Resurrection, the first thing you'll notice is the incredible atmosphere portrayed via the use of jaw dropping visuals, haunting sound and spooky locales. The cut scenes are some of the best I've seen in an adventure game and are almost worth the price of admission in themselves."
