And whenever you THINK you're free to decide...
- Pseudo Nim
Well, here goes another example of ... not sure what. Political correctness? Naive
"But-it's-for-the-kids" philosophy? Simple, ages-old stupidity? A court in British Columbia has
banned the sale and rental of
Soldier of Fortune, as reported by
The Vancouver Sun. They appear to require it to be only sold
and rented in areas reserved for adults. "Yeah, that'll be two hardcore porn tapes, Debbie Does Dallas and
one copy of Soldier of Fortune, thank you." Ridiculous. I think I'll go back to watching Ghost in the Shell.

Size XXL CD-RW
- Pseudo Nim
Cirrus Logic
has upped the ante on recordable media with an announcement of a dual-layer, 1.3GB
CD-RW drive. No word yet on backward compatibility, though unrelated murmurs along the
Wire have been heard to claim full backwards compatibility with regular CD-ROM
readers. We'll see. A neat feature is also a "patented buffer," which, claims the
company, will improve data transfers between the drive and the host. It might actually
come in useful, too - I haven't heard of any buffer underruns in a while, but I haven't
seen any 16x writers in a while, either. It will also read at 48x. In an unexpected
slap to the power users, though, the inital offering will be IDE-only.
Duke Nukem Forever: Bill My Guide
- Pseudo Nim
Isn't really much of a shock (unfortunately), but official word is in:
Duke Nukem Forever is rated "PX", "Penguins eXcluded" - to use a corny analogy.
Translated from lamespeak, there won't be a Linux version. "... I doubt there is enough
money to be made to warrant a commercial Linux version," said George Broussard of
3D Realms in a bulletin board post.
Still... there's always Loki.
Internet Explorer 5.5 Released
- Pseudo Nim
The final version of the 5.5 version of the browser has been released. Some people have been
anxiously awaiting it, some never cared, some grumble at every new release. Whatever your fancy,
you can grab it here

Fallout Tactics New Shots
- Pseudo Nim
This isn't -really- that groundbreaking a news item, but since I'm sure many people are awaiting the release
of Fallout Tactics like a return of Christ to Earth (I definitely am), you might be interested to know that some
new shots were released.
X-Box: the dream emulation system?
- Pseudo Nim
Slashdot.org brought up an interesting subject: is
the X-Box a dream emulation system? Is it possible that Microsoft will cuddle up with the major console players and provide
a capability of playing PSX, NES, SNES, N64 and other console games? Sounds relatively neat, and would definitely put the
X-Box ahead of the competition. Which is probably why it'll never happen... but an I-Opener sort of "backdoor" would be neat.
No Resident Evil 3/PC - D'oh
- Pseudo Nim
An article at Gamecenterclaims that
Resident Evil 3 for PC won't be out in North America. Apparently Eidos is cuddly with manufacturers/publishers in Europe,
but not in North America. Not sure how that works... but, I suppose, for a change, Europe will get a highly anticipated game
way before the US does.

Diablo II a Top Seller
- Pseudo Nim
According to the The NPD Group, Diablo II
and Icewind Dale are the current #1 / #2 sellers, respectively. Cool, Regis and that millionaire game are finally ceding place to
the REAL kings.

Links LS 2001 Site Launched
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Microsoft
announced the launch of the official Web site for Links 2001
Links 2001, the most significant upgrade to the Links series in over a decade, features an entirely new rendering engine
that delivers unprecedented ball physics and graphics. Gamers are invited to visit the Links 2001 site to learn about the
Arnold Palmer Course Architect, new tour players and courses, golfer animations and personalities, and more.
The official site for Links 2001 provides PC golfers with tips-and-tricks from PGA pro Lanny Nielson, as well as commentary
from the game's developers to help players stay on the fairway and under par. The site features a detailed summary of each
course in the game, along with screen shots, course and signature hole descriptions, and beauty shot desktop wallpaper that
is available for download. Gamers can also go "behind the scenes" of Links 2001 and watch motion capture videos of Sergio
Garcia. Garcia played an active role in the development of the game and consulted with Microsoft on online components that
enhance the PC golf experience.
Visitors to the Links 2001 site can also download and view an in-game video featuring the all-new Arnold Palmer Course
Architect (APCA). The APCA provides users with the power and versatility to accurately recreate their home course in a
powerful real-time 3-D system, using the same tools employed by the Links 2001 team. Players can tweak every inch of
fairway with the APCA and create tunnels and arches with full control over each point on the course. A robust library of
trees, shrubs and other vegetation allows players to sort for the climate and season that fit their home course, or they
can import their own custom images.
Motocross Madness 2 Terrain Editor Tutorials
- Jimmy Clydesdale
Microsoft
and Rainbow Studios announced the availability of two Armadillo video tutorials.
These tutorials are narrated by the game's designer, Robb Rinard, and are designed to help gamers understand the basic
usage of the Motocross Madness 2 terrain editor, code named Armadillo.
The first tutorial, of a two-part series, provides gamers with step-by-step instructions for creating customized racing
tracks for use in Motocross Madness 2. In addition to learning the steps involved in customizing their own tracks, gamers
will learn how to switch between 2D and 3D images of their track, "fly" around their tracks, and import customized textures
such as trees, hay bales and signage. Gamers will also learn how to add and edit spline on the track, creating the outline
and boundaries for the custom terrain. The second installment of the video tutorial instructs gamers on how to use the
gradient tool in Adobe Photoshop to create challenging sections and jumps. The gradient tool and its utilities allow
players to create a variety of jumps including accurate reproductions of take-off and landing jumps, double jumps, whoops,
sections, step-ups and table tops.
The terrain editor not only lets gamers create a variety of racing tracks, but also lets them populate their racing world
with 3D objects and entire ecosystems. Using Armadillo, gamers can create custom tracks to use in the Baja, Enduro,
Freestyle Stunts, Nationals and even Supercross events. Players can also add a variety of obstacles to make their terrain
more competitive. While Armadillo is not a 3D modeler, it is compatible with 3D Studio Max, which allows gamers to create
and import their finished model into the terrain editor for placement.
