Review - Mortyr (c) Interplay - Drexel Spivey [ Go! ]
Tread Marks Mods Page
Longbow Digital Arts has announced that the
Tread Marks Modifications Page
is finally up, with some info and advice on how to make changes to the game.
The Modifications Page also has an easy to download SuperFriction modification, which gives a much greater degree of control when
driving your tank, at the expense of being able to do power-slides through turns. If you think the controls are too loose, be sure to give this a try!

GO Review: Mortyr
Mirage Media's FPS, Mortyr, has been a long time coming now. A number of Publisher related problems caused this game
to be delayed several months. Thanks to Interplay though, Mortyr has finally hit stores, with mixed opinions. Here's a little
blurb from our review of Mortyr:
"The year is 2093, in an alternate future that has been shaped by the Nazis' winning World War II through the use
of a super weapon. Luckily, a scientist has come to discover this super weapon and dispatches his son Sebastian
Mortyr, played by you, to the past in order to disrupt the Nazi plans and change the future and oh no I've gone
cross-eyed! Worry not though, that's about as immersed in the story as you'll get. Besides an introductory movie,
which isn't particular well done, there are absolutely no cutscenes in the game to advance the story, nor are
there any interactions with NPCs. Instead, Sebastian will find books and journals with entries that help progress
the storyline. Interestingly enough, these books are constantly found floating in the air above tables and what
not, because who among us doesn't have Grand 'n Toys exciting 'hover books' to write in? Can I get a show of
hands?"
Be sure to check out the rest of our Mortyr review, including several visuals. Enjoy!

GO Review: King of Dragon Pass
Straight from the indy circuit comes A-Sharp's RPG / Strategy title, King of Dragon Pass. Here's a little blurb from
our review of King of Dragon Pass:
"Aside from the numerous elements that require your management, you'll also have to deal with combat.
Unfortunately, you're very much removed from combat, with no direct control of the battle itself. Pre-battle
choices, such as using a magical item, may impact the result, but the outcome is very much random."

Cinemaware Returns
If you have ever heard of such classic games as Defender of the Crown, Rocket Ranger, The King of Chicago, and
It Came from the Desert, then you are probably familiar with the development studio known as
Cinemaware.
Many of Cinemaware's games landed on the Amiga and even the Nintendo to high praise and critical acclaim.
The company was a pioneer at developing games with content and graphics that were well ahead of their time,
but sadly enough the company disappeared into obscurity during the early 90's.
Almost a decade later, the company has returned with a new vision. So what is Cinemaware planning, now that
it has returned? The company says that it plans on a number of sequels along with some new game offerings. For more details, check out this
official statement
as released by the newly reformed company.

GO Review: Battlezone 2
The month of January has been a relatively uneventful one, that is until we got our hands on Activision's Battlezone 2. Here's a little
blurb from our review of Battlezone 2:
"The single player experience is nothing different from the original, except that there has been some heavy
scripting work going on, with some of the most inflexible scripting a title could have seen to date. Most missions
are fine, but then in others it becomes impossible as the strict script refuses to let you win because of some minor
thing you didn't do somewhere. Still, when it works, the scripting makes the missions varied and more interesting
than the usual "survive with a base after first few minutes, build big army, kill all" scenario."

GO Review: Wild Wild West
The television show was shallow and so was the movie, but at least the television series was entertaining. So the question arises,
does Southpeak Interactive's PC version of the Wild Wild West continue the legacy of the series, or the misfortune of the movie? Here's
a little blurb from our review of Wild Wild West - The Steel Assassin:
"The Steel Assassin makes use of several video cut scenes to span the action-adventure sequences. The game is
revealed is a series of acts, or scenes, which flip-flop between West and Gordon, with the two heroes intersecting
for the climatic finale at Ford's Theater. Much like the movie or television show, the scenes involving West are
usually action-oriented, while the scenes involving Gordon take more wits and puzzle-solving to complete."

Might & Magic VIII Announced
3DO
has announced the next title in the acclaimed Might & Magic series.
Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer is set in the fantasy world of Jadame. The presence of Escaton has been sensed
and gates to the planes of Fire, Air, Earth and Water have been opened. Denizens from these realms threaten to converge at the Conflux
Crystal and decimate the realms of Jadame, Enroth and Erathia.
People will again create custom characters from a variety of races and classes, including nobleman and clerics, and set out to save the land.
Dozens of creatures lie in wait, so it may be necessary to enlist the aid of the more enigmatic races--including trolls, corrupt elves and
minotaurs--to see the journey to its end. An expanded world view has been added to the familiar interface and dozens of quests and
sub-quests are featured. Gamers can also adjust the difficulty setting to novice or expert, and switch to real-time or turn-based adventuring on
a whim. The party will develop new spells and special abilities as they gain levels.

Talonsoft Departures
Five employees of Talonsoft
(a division of Take-Two Interactive) resigned from the company over the
weekend. The developers that have left TalonSoft represent the bulk of
the company's hardcore wargaming development team. Rumor has it that
this group of five will be joining another yet un-named developer.
Bob McNamara said in a letter to colleagues and friends yesterday: "This
is to let you know that I, along with Charles Kibler, Steve Langmead,
Robert Waters and Tim Kipp, have resigned from TalonSoft. The reasons
are many and varied, but overall we've become unhappy with our present
and future prospects there. It wasn't an easy decision, and I'm not at
liberty right now to talk about our future plans, but these will be made
known in a week or so."
