Gothic in July - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Egmont Interactive and Piranha Bytes announced today that they will release their action-roleplaying game, Gothic in July 2000. Gothic is a real-time 3D action RPG in which the player is forced to survive in a prison world divided into competing factions. The player is forced to choose one of four character classes and develop his or her skills in that class, moving up through the hierarchy through a series of battles.

Gothic contains a number of unique features including the physical evolution of a character's skillset and animation as he moves through the game. As the character's strength and skills improve, the development and evolution of those skills will be visible in his movements and choices. Gothic also features a world that features a social system that affects gameplay; - if the player defeats a certain member of another faction or kills a specific monster, this fact will be apparent in the player's next encounters. If the player kills a group member, the group will be hostile and attempt to exact revenge. Monsters, too, will cooperate with one another in certain situations and as events occur, alliances and enemy lines shift accordingly.

Gothic is scheduled for US release in July 2000, but will be presented by Egmont and Piranha Bytes at E3 in Los Angeles in May. Egmont Interactive and Octagon Entertainment are currently seeking a worldwide publishing partner for Gothic.

GO Review: Iron Plague - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • With the demise of Cavedog, Total Annihilations Kingdoms: The Iron Plague becomes their final release and a sweet expansion pack at that, delivering an entirely new civilization. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Creon is unlike any of the previous four civilizations. While they were built on magic, Creon excels with science. Units like the Submersible, Barnstormer, Mechanic and steam-powered tanks reflect a civilization rooted in engineering and metalwork. The story behind Creon is unveiled in a 24-mission campaign in which scenarios range from scripted battles to endurance races."

GO Review: Devil's Bridge - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Hidden & Dangerous, while more than innovative, was chalk full of bugs. Unfortunately the expansion pack, Devil's Bridge, takes after the original with it's share of problems too. Here's a blurb from our review of Devil's Bridge:

"If you were hoping Devil's Bridge would improve on the number of bugs found in the original Hidden & Dangerous, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. As an expansion pack, Devil's Bridge has the quantity but the quality is completely lacking. It fails to deliver a bug-free gaming experience and remains far too unstable."

GO Review: Invictus - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • A Real Time Strategy game rich in Greek Mythology, how can a concept like that go wrong? Invictus: In the Shadow of Olympus is proof that a fantastic idea is nothing unless it delivers. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"The scenario design in Invictus is laughable. Most missions consist of searching for enemies and killing them while protecting and rescuing innocent civilians. What it boils down too is a massive combat sequence where bigger will undoubtedly win. The element of strategy seems to be missing not only in mission design, but in terms of Artificial Intelligence as well. The AI of your troops and the enemies' troops are absolutely horrible. After completing their original orders, troops tend to stand around awaiting your next call, even if they're being attacked. Innocent civilians tend to stand around getting slaughtered instead of running for cover while the good guys fight the good battle. The only good news, and not really so, is that the enemy AI is just as bad. They don't seem to do much themselves until certain triggers are activated."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Invictus review including a number of screenshots. Enjoy!

GO Review: Nox - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • We've heard all the talk, now it's time to walk the walk. Electronic Arts and Westwood Studios' Nox features a blend of RPG and Action elements that forge a unique gaming experience, despite a few shortcomings. We've posted up TWO reviews of Nox and here's just a sample from one of those reviews:

"There is a rather prevalent element of humour throughout the entire introduction, which spices the game up immediately. It would seem that the avatar of Nox is none other than (drum roll) some guy named Jack. The intro shows Hecubah, the Queen of the Undead (the child that Jandor spared) performing a ritual that will release the Orb from it's imprisonment in another time/space, which just happens to be in the 20th century, perched atop this guy Jack's television. When a vortex opens to engulf the Orb, Jack is sucked into it as well."

Be sure to check out both of our Nox reviews including over a dozen visuals. Enjoy!

Enemy Engaged Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Empire Interactive has announced the development of Enemy Engaged: RAH-66 Comanche Versus Ka-52 Hokum, due to hit stores in the second quarter of 2000.

Building on the success of Apache Havoc, Oxford-based developer Razorworks is going to give people the chance to pilot two of the world?s deadliest, next-generation assault helicopters. In Western hangars sits the U.S. Army?s futuristic RAH-66 Comanche gunship, a stealth helicopter with a radar signature one-six hundredth that of a Hellfire missile. On Eastern airstrips lies the Comanche?s Russian-built counterpart, the twin-rotor death-deliverer called the Ka-52 Hokum-B. Both can deliver several varieties of destruction at the touch of a button.

Featuring state-of-the-art 3D graphics, Enemy Engaged puts virtual pilots right into the heart of the modern digital battlefield. Three challenging war zones--Taiwan, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia--have been modeled to push one's abilities to the limit, with each featuring a variety of offensive and defensive missions over vast simulated landscapes. Soar low across the grasslands of Asia and assault armored convoys at night, or escort transports on daring troop insertion sorties in the desert. Enemy Engaged will feature a broader range of missions and target types, better enemy and wingman AI, plus more detail, camera views and accessibility.

Using an improved 3D engine that features transform and lighting, and similar avionics and dynamic action, Enemy Engaged is designed to complement Apache Havoc rather than replace it. It will also boast improved stereo music, and digitized speech and sound effects. Playable either as a full-blown simulation or, at its simplest, a computer-aided arcade-style shooter, Enemy Engaged also features full multiplayer functionality over serial cable, modem, LAN and Internet connection

Dreamland Chronicles Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Bethesda today announced it will publish the upcoming turn-based strategy offering, The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge. Developed at Mythos, the UK-based studio behind such titles as X-COM and Magic & Mayhem, Freedom Ridge claims high-end 3D graphics and world mechanics, intense combat, and an involved story.

Set in the near future, Freedom Ridge uses themes from classic science fiction and modern UFO conspiracy theories to create its setting. After a devastating 70-day war against alien invaders, the human race finds itself on the edge of extinction. With the military forces and governments of the world in ruins, gamers command humanity's last hope--a resistance force called the Terran Liberation Army. Starting with a meager cache of captured weapons and technology, one must repel the invaders and free the Earth from alien domination.

People must create new bases to furnish forces, protect the surviving civilian population, and fight for every resource they need. Money is now worthless. Using anything from scavenged F16 aircraft and M16s to alien technology, troops will need to master all manner of weaponry and vehicles for tactical squad-based combat against alien foes at hotspots around the globe. Characters will uncover the truth about Area 51 and alien abductions. The Dreamland Chronicles is scheduled for release in Quarter 4 2000 on the PC and Playstation 2.

GO Review: Arcomage - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • What started out as a Magic: The Gathering style card game within the realm of Might & Magic VII, has now flourished into a standalone title. The verdict, a game that should have stayed put. Here's a blurb from our review of Arcomage:

"Arcomage is a single or two player card game in which the goal is to either build your tower to a certain height, build up your resources to a certain quantity, or destroy your opponent's tower before your enemy can achieve any of these conditions themselves. Each player takes turns and at the start of each turn, their kingdom produces a quantity of each resource equal to the strengths of various resource generators. You then draw cards that represent creatures, spells or artifacts which are used to produce varying effects. Sound a little like Magic: The Gathering? Well, the similarities don't stop there."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Arcomage review including a few visuals. Enjoy!

The Sims Nude Patch - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • You knew it was coming, just a matter of time. That's right, somebody has released a nude skin for Maxis' The Sims. So now when your Sims take a shower or a bath, the censor will disapear and you'll see them in all their glory. The bad news, or good news depending on your point of view, is that the individual(s) responsible for the nude skin don't quite seem to know what a naked woman or man looks like (perhaps due to a lack of experience?). I'll leave it up to you to find out but let's just say there seems to be a few things missing. Allllrighty then, enjoy?

Editor's Note: If this isn't a tasteful way to start the news week off, I don't know what is.
