GO Review: Beetle Cup Crazy - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Punch buggy blue, no punch backs! Seventeen legendary models, fifty original cars and 5 modes of play, yet Infogrames' Beetle Crazy Cup (or Beetle Buggin' for US gamers) still comes up short at the finish line. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"When I fired up Beetle Crazy Cup (BCC), I couldn't help but remember a game I had played on my friend's N64 a few months ago, a game called Beetle Adventure Racing. I thought that this was going to be another lame, half-assed port to the PC. Thankfully, I was wrong, sort of. It was lame, but it wasn't a port."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Beetle Crazy Cup review including a few visuals. Enjoy!

Matrix War Game Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Matrix has been redesigning many of SSI's "classic" wargames and now is expanding and developing its own designs.

Two games designs are currently being developed. The first will be a strategic and diplomatic game for up to seven players that covers warfare in Europe during the 18th and early 19th centuries entitled Wars of Napoleon 1805-1815, and can be expected this summer. The second design is a four player strategic level American Civil War game titled Brother Against Brother. Both games will have full PBEM and Internet support.

Also included will be proprietary level and art editors for creating levels, and customizing characters and weapons.

GO Review: Swamp Buggy Racing - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • WizardWorks' latest budget title has turkey written all over it and let's face it, somebody has to sound the alarm. So here's a little blurb from our review of Swamp Buggy Racing, which managed to knock off Extreme Paintbrawl II as the lowest rated game so far in the year 2000:

"As for the multiplayer.. Oh wait, there is none. It's a good thing too. I'd hate to have thought that WizardWorks would continue to pay someone to program this garbage."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Swamp Buggy Racing review including a dozen visuals. Enjoy!

Baldur's Gate II Details - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Interplay announced more details about its upcoming RPG sequel Baldur's Gate II. In regards to screen resoluation and 3D technology the company stated:

"At 800x600 the game looks crisper, you can see more of the area and the performance hit is negligible with a 4 meg card. It is by far the best way to play BG2. Although it is not official (hence supported) BG2 currently supports whatever resolution your video card can display. You can see most of a 8x8 (a outdoor terrain section that is 8 screens by 8 screens in size) in 1600x1200 and is pretty neat, but the GUI is sacrificed. As far as 3D support is concerned we have chosen OpenGL because of our experience with it, the ease of implementation and it is not card specific. MDK2 and Neverwinter Nights both use OpenGL and our programmers have played with the API for years now. We were confident we could get the performance, the features, and deliver it on time if we started with OpenGL. This is not to say we may do other API support, but that Direct 3d is not in yet, and may not make it in if the schedule does not allow for it."

The company also revealed more information regarding new classes, races and kits:

"In BG2 there are over 20 new kits, a new race, and a host of new skills, proficiencies and abilities that the player has access to. Most of these were gleaned from the literally thousands of good suggestions on the message boards that the fans posted. The half-orc is a perfect example. Kits were chosen from all the AD&D source books. We took this HUGE list, and cut all the ones we could not implement due to technical issues. Then we cut some that were, in our opinion, unbalanced. Lastly we cut some to even out the numbers of kits per class (we didn't want 50 warrior kits and four thief ones). So the process was part technical, part experience and part arbitrary. Because some of them were cut arbitrarily, we have a list of "standby" kits that may still make it into the game due to fan requests or if we find easier ways to implement them."

Finally, more monster information was released:

"Everything from vampires, illithid, beholders and mephits have been added to the game. We are more than doubling the number of monsters that were available to the player in BG and the game will be a very varied (and dangerous) place for the hearty adventurer. The number one restriction we had on creating new monsters was animation time. Actually creating the monster and placing it in the game is minor compared to the time required to model, texture, bone, animate and render the creature. For the most part you can open any AD&D monsterous compendium, look up the statistics of a monster and that will be what you see in BG2. Some monsters are more powerful than you would expect when initially put into the game. The beholder is a tough creature, we all knew that, but when our test party actually FACED one in the game and was annihilated in two seconds, it was time to tweak things. We made it so he used his stone to flesh eyestalk less and slowed how often he used his other eyes. He is still amazingly tough, but it is possible to defeat him if you play smart and prepare."

Baldur's Gate II is still in development and should hit stores later this year.

Tomb Raider Rumors - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Water cooler rumors indicate that there are at least two more Tomb Raider titles planned. The first, Tomb Raider V, will be released Q4, 2000 and the second, Tomb Raider: The Movie, will be released in conjunction with the major motion picture in the summer of 2001. Eidos Interactive has not confirmed any of this information. If that rumored schedule is correct, Tomb Raider V will be released exactly one year after the previous Lara Croft adventure, a trend that we've seen year after year from Eidos. That leaves little room for improvement in terms of the actual game, a trend we've also seen year after year.

No E3 for Duke Nukem & Max Payne? - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Word has it that Duke Nukem Forever and Max Payne will once again be snubbed at this year's E3 show (much like Jim Carrey at the Oscars). The games will neither be shown on the show floor nor behind closed doors to the media.

Update: e3.Stomped.com talked to 3D Realms' Scott Miller, who is now saying there's a chance a non-interactive video loop might be available for viewing. In his words:

"At the most, DNF will have a non-interactive showing at E3, maybe a video loop. Most likely the same for Max, but nothing for sure has been decided yet."

The words 'At the most' certainly don't ring well though.

Microsoft Baseball 2001 Announced - Seth Gecko
  • Microsoft today announced its latest PC sports title, Baseball 2001. Microsoft Baseball 2001 promises a unification of the Baseball Mogul simulation technology with Microsoft's tradition for enhanced graphics and exciting gameplay. Baseball 2001 features a newly added comprehensive front-office management simulation, enhanced graphics, ambient sounds and seamless arcade action to produce the most complete out-of-the-box PC-based baseball game.

Endorsed by two-time All-Star and 1997 Rookie of the Year shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, who graces the game's box cover, Baseball 2001 promises to carry on the Microsoft tradition of innovation. The Baseball Mogul technology allows players to control key front-office aspects of the game, letting them handle everything from the financial responsibilities of tracking a club's payroll to the general managerial duties of fostering trades and signing free agents. For example, a high payroll will result in less money for free agency, and this will be reflected in the quality and quantity of free agents that a ball club can sign during the season.

Baseball 2001 also features accurate statistics from the 1999 MLB season, as well as 35 stadiums, including brand-new Pacific Bell Park, Comerica Park, En ron Field and Miller Park, re-created to resemble their real-life counterparts.

In add-on mode, they are up against intruders of varying race and castes who board their ship from within the BCM game world. With BCTE installed, gamers have the option of entering first-person mode to tour their ship, train for combat, or join their marine complement and engage intruders who board the ship. Sixteen person multiplayer support for stand-alone mode is planned.

GO Review: The Sims - Seth Gecko
  • Will Wright has allowed us to control the City, now it's time to control the Sims. Not only is Maxis' The Sims innovative, it's also a hell of a lot of fun. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Like all Sim games, The Sims is a management game of sorts, though the twist here is that you are managing a person, several roommates, or a nice big family, whichever you want. Upon starting the game, you can create your own characters with points distributed between a few attributes such as neatness, playfulness, outgoing and others. Then you choose your character model, name and you're off."

Rumors: Master of Orion III & Magic II - Seth Gecko
  • A few months ago, Microprose developers pitched, to Hasbro Interactive, the idea for a sequel to their award-winning strategy title, Master of Magic. Word has it that Master of Magic II has been rejected, a decision that doesn't come as much of a surprise since Hasbro Interactive currently owns the rights to both the Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons licenses and would undoubtedly prefer to concentrate any fantasy games on those two franchises. So instead, Microprose developers are rumored to be working on Master of Orion III. So the question remains, is the gossip around the office water cooler getting a little out of hand or is MOO 3 all but announced? I believe it's the later, but until we get further word it's only a RUMOR and an intriguing one at that.
