Sacrifice & Spec Ops at E3 - Seth Gecko
  • Ripcord Games has confirmed that it will show their latest Spec Ops title at E3, entitled Spec Ops: M.O.U.T. The latest Spec Ops title is a pure action game sporting Monolith's LithTech 2.0 engine. There's hope for the Spec Ops series yet.

Shiny Entertainment has also confirmed that it will showcase their upcoming title Sacrifice at E3. Previously scheduled to appear at the now defunct GamesCon, Shiny will finally unveil the game which industry insiders are calling a technological advancement. Too bad E3 is still a few months away.

Unreal II at E3 - Seth Gecko
  • The Good News: It's expected that Epic Games' Unreal II, the direct sequel to Unreal, will be shown for the first time at E3 in May. The Bad News: It's likely that Unreal II will be shown behind closed doors for press members only.

UT Developers Announce Dark Sector - Seth Gecko
  • Game developer Digital Extremes has announced its follow-up to Unreal Tournament. DARK SECTOR is designed to blend the first-person action elements of Unreal Tournament with the scope and character evolution of a persistent online universe.

The game is set in the trail of world devastation, when survivors are scattered throughout the solar system in a vast web of outposts and space stations. Anarchy reigns as violent factions wage war over limited resources. As the story goes, remnants of world government have sanctioned bounty hunting in a desperate attempt to control the growing chaos. Players carve out their destiny in a violent struggle for fortune and fame. One can begin a career as a bounty hunter, pursuing a target from Mars to the moons of Jupiter, and then face off in an ice mine on Europa. Or one can choose a more evil path hunting law-abiding citizens as an assassin.

People can band together in formal syndicates, attempting to invade and secure resource fortresses, or hold grudge matches in challenge arenas. They can wager on matching their abilities against others, competing in team battles and ladders. An advanced engine featuring a new hardware renderer will exploit the latest advances in graphics technology such as transform and lighting, advanced animation, multi-texturing, enhanced surface lighting, and other improvements. Space flight will allow people to travel between space stations and engage in dog fights. As DARK SECTOR evolves, new elements will be introduced to enrich and expand the experience. The title is in development, though a release date has yet to be determined.

Hasbro Announces 2000 Lineup - Seth Gecko
  • Hasbro Interactive has announced it's 2000 lineup as it prepares for the American International Toy Fair, Feb. 13-17, in Manhattan.

n Monopoly Tycoon, people will decide what and where to build in a 3D Monopoly-themed city environment. A city of traditional properties will come to life as people buy real estate, construct buildings, and watching their city grow. Interaction with game characters, which includes reading their thoughts, will help players formulate strategies. This title will be available in October 2000.

Hasbro will also introduce a live Internet-based game show title called You?re Full of It, which is described as a ?hip television game show and a fast-paced interactive experience.? It will be available this September along with game show-themed offerings Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune 2, and Jeopardy 2.

With the addition of the NASCAR and Formula One licenses, Hasbro has entered the motor sports category. With NASCAR Heat, Hasbro is claiming great graphics, authenticity, and ease of use. The game includes 30 NASCAR drivers and Winston Cup racing courses, and will be available this October. A Formula One licensed simulation that covers a complete Grand Prix season, Grand Prix 3?s open-wheel racing will include accurate reproductions of all the circuits, teams, drivers and cars. Grand Prix 3 also has a new physics model and full tumble. It is slated for a Quarter 2 2000 release.

Hasbro is resurrecting its lucrative and adventurous amphibian for a sequel to the three million-selling Frogger. Frogger 2 will come with dozens of new levels spread over wild environments. New characters, including Frogger?s female friend, Lillie, along with vivid 3D graphics, will be hitting stores in September 2000. Raise your hand if you did not see this one coming. Hmmm... Not too many hands up.

The classic maze game of the 1980s returns in full 3D with the all-new Pac-Man CD-ROM. The story: Five magical power pills that strengthen Pac-Man's planet have been stolen and scattered across time at the hand of his archenemies--any guess who that would be?--the Ghosts. Pac-Man?s quest is to retrieve the pills from the different eras, which range from ancient Egypt to the Wild West of the 1800s, and return them to the planet core before it cools. This one will be hitting stores in September.

Although we have previewed this one based on a pre-release alpha, it is good enough to mention again: Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim--in a slight renaming to no doubt encourage people to associate the title with the current wave of popular Sim releases--is coming in March. You have been crowned King, and from the walls of your castle are challenged to meet the needs of your growing empire and its varied inhabitants. Each decision has an impact on the well being of your property, and those upon whom you depend to carry out your wishes. Each quest will require you to develop a unique strategy, build your tax base, collect moneys owed to the crown, explore your surroundings, and vanquish your enemies. Remember that it is a ?sim? game now.

Risk II posits people in the year 1812. Napoleon's army is on the march, and it is every empire for itself. As supreme commander, players seize territories, crush their enemies, and betray their allies in a fast-paced quest for world domination. People can play the classic game or the new same-time-turn option. This release will be in stores in March 2000.

Turok 3 Announced, but not for PC - Seth Gecko
  • We reported this piece of news a couple of months ago, but I suppose we'll publish the story one more time. Acclaim has announced that Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is under development in the company's Austin Studios, and is due out late this summer. Acclaim also announced that a PC version of Turok 3 is not planned for release. Due to the tremendous competition in the FPS market, and the fact that the Turok series is developed specifically for consoles and then ported to the PC, Acclaim decided to bring a halt to the PC version of the series.

Cavedog Closes Doors - Seth Gecko
  • GT Interactive is closing its Bothell, Washington-based development studio, Cavedog Entertainment, as well as its value distribution business. The closures were announced after GT suffered a sharp drop in revenues during the third quarter (October to December 1999).

Cavedog rose to fame with its first title, the real-time strategy game Total Annihilation. However, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, released last year, was met with less enthusiasm. Meanwhile, other projects, such as the first-person shooter Amen: The Awakening, were canceled.

    Homeland Announced - Seth Gecko
  • In a land where magic is forbidden, where the tyrannical hand of power disguises itself as the law, prophecy dictates that the ultimate power of darkness shall one day return. The Devourer of Souls, long ago banished to the Void by the Wizards of Light, now breaks free from its prison. This time, there are no mages alive who can stop it.

In the small farming village of WhiteWater, you dream of an opportunity to get away from your chores for a little while. When a stranger comes to town searching for a historical relic, your quest into the nearby ruins of Mandelin quickly surpasses your expectations, drawing you deep into a world of magic and an age-old battle.

Spiderweb Software, makers of the award-winning Exile series, and DragonLore proudly announce the upcoming release of Homeland: the Stone of Night, an exciting new fantasy role-playing game for Windows 95/98/NT. Homeland features beautiful 16-bit 3-D graphics, an intricate plot, and a huge world filled with cunning towns, forests, caves, islands, and dungeons. Its party-based system allows extensive control over character development, and real-time combat keeps the game moving swiftly.

Homeland: The Stone of Night will be available on CD-ROM and will be released in Spring, 2000. It requires either a PC or 100% compatible running Windows 95/98/NT using DirectX3.0 or newer. Minimum system requirements: 16 bit color, 32 MB free RAM, 200 MB hard drive space. Homeland can be purchased via Spiderweb Software's website.

    Werewolf Update - Seth Gecko
  • Travis Williams, former Executive Producer at ASC Games, has given an update on the Unreal-powered Werewolf title and ASC Games' recent closing. Apparently Werewolf is still in development by Dreamforge and is currently 3-4 months away from a finished product. They are currently looking for a new publisher for the title and have approached Take Two Interactive. Take Two Interactive had no comment when asked about the situation. So for those of you who were wondering the status of Werewolf: The Apocolypse, know that the game is not dead, there still might be some light at the end of the tunnel despite the closure of ASC Games.

Moonshine Runners Website - Seth Gecko
  • The Russian company K-D Lab has announced the launch of a site dedicated to Moonshine Runners, a new arcade racer being developed by the company.

Moonshine Runners is a funny racing game where the player drives vehicles that they build themselves from "biotic" and "abiotic" parts. The races take place in little wonderland worlds, where players can use a variety of magic spells to affect the progress of the race. The game uses a state-of-the-art 3D technology and racy art, which immerse the player into a juicy environment of a fairy race. Apart from the popular real-time racing, the game features a unique turn-based racing mode where you control the vehicle using waypoints. All the competitions are linked together into a non-linear adventure with final bosses in each world. The game is designed for a wide audience of arcade racing fans who want something fresh in their favorite genre of easy and fun entertainment.

Moonshine Runners has attracted attention of game industry experts. The project was selected as one of the nine finalists in the Independent Games Festival 2000, which means that the game will be demonstrated at GDC 2000 in San Jose in March as one of the contenders for the festival awards.

Panty Raider Announced - Seth Gecko
  • Simon & Schuster Interactive, this May, will ship a PC game in which the one thing that can save the Earth from devastation is supermodel underware. For about $20, Panty Raider: From Here to Immaturity will transport gamers to Model Isle, where a photo shoot is in session, on a mission to photograph supermodels for three testosterone-driven teenage aliens.

As the story goes, the teenage aliens had worn out a lingerie catalog and decided to set out in search of supermodels. People assume the role of Nelson, an innocent bystander who is forced to help the aliens in their quest. With the fate of Earth on the line, Nelson's job is to photographic certain models in specific styles and colors of undergarments.

Panty Raider is seen from Nelson?s point of view, and starts with the aliens telling him which girls and underwear to photograph. Once teleported to Model Isle, time is of the essence. Nelson can use all the tools available to him, including one liners, credit cards, and tiny mints to lure models out of the woods, x-ray glasses to see what underwear each model has on, and goop to throw that removes their outer clothing. The photos are added to Nelson's inventory. If all the snapshots meet specifications, Earth is saved.

Review - Tower of the Ancients (c) Fiendish Games - FitFortDanga [ GO! ]

GO Review: Tower of the Ancients - Seth Gecko
  • Puzzle games are a rarity these days which makes Tower of the Ancients, from Fiendish Games, a breath of fresh air. The title started off well enough, but ended up getting slapped around. Here's a blurb from our review:

"The graphics are what you'd expect from a budget developer: crude. Lighting "effects" consist of pure white hyper-pixelated blobs randomly floating around the screen. The backgrounds are somewhat pleasing, but nothing that couldn't have been done five years ago. The hand of God strangely resembles the hand of a malnourished Ethiopian."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Tower of the Ancients review including a number of visuals. Enjoy!
