Diablo II Stress Test Details - Seth Gecko
  • Blizzard today announced plans for Diablo II's Battle.net stress test -- the final phase of Diablo II beta testing and the company's largest public beta test to date. Starting Monday morning, hardcore gamers around the world will have the opportunity to register for their chance to be one of up to 100,000 players to be chosen to help stress test Battle.net servers prior to the launch of Diablo II. The beta signup is scheduled for a seven-day period exclusively on ZDNet's GameSpot beginning on Monday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m. PT and ending Sunday, May 7 at 9:00 p.m PT. Applications from around the world will be accepted. Following the registration period, Blizzard will randomly select up to 100,000 testers. Only one submission per person will be accepted, and selected testers will be notified via email within a few days of the sign-up period ending.

The beta, which will only be playable over Battle.net, will include the Barbarian character class and portions of the game's first act. The purpose of the beta test is to ensure the stability of Battle.net servers worldwide. In preparation for this final phase of beta testing, Blizzard will end the current on-going closed beta test a few days prior to the start of the Battle.net stress test. Participants in the closed beta will automatically be included in the group that is selected to participate in the stress test.

Editor's Note: Something smells fishy around here and let's just say it ain't las chicas on the corner.

GO Review: Lemmings Revolution - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Blue muumuu, green hair and as dumb as a thumbtack. Ring any bells? That's right, those lovable Lemmings are back in Psygnosis' Lemmings Revolution. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"The Lemmings legacy began in 1985, when DMA Design created the original Lemmings. It became an instant classic with its unique puzzles and addictive gameplay. In the years following, sequels and spin-offs began pouring out, not only for the PC but for a number of console systems as well. The series became diluted and some of the later titles were as dumb as the lovable creatures themselves. With the release of Lemmings Revolution, it appears the series has come full circle by returning to its roots, simple, addictive gameplay."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Lemmings Revolution review including a blue muumuu full of visuals. Enjoy!

Red Alert 2 Announced - Seth Gecko
  • Westwood Studios today announced Red Alert 2, the sequel to their award-winning real-time strategy game. The product will be available for Windows 95 and 98, and feature an onslaught of new units, tactics and strategies. As in the original, people will be able to lead Soviet or Allied forces. Soviet commanders will invade North America to claim it for mother Russia; Allied commanders will fight to repel the invaders and save liberty.

Both sides are well-armed with conventional weapons and experimental technology. The Soviets can engage in psychic warfare, wield nuclear weapons and scorch enemies with Tesla technology. Allied forces can teleport with chrono technology, conduct covert operations with the help of gap generators, and rain down lightening bolts through weather control. Supporting these high-powered, advanced weapons are massive conventional forces, including armies, air power and navies. The war rages across recognizable American cities, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, the Big Apple, the Florida Keys, Pearl Harbor and even Texas. The war will then spread to Mexico, Germany, France and Siberia.

People will be able to engage in combat over a LAN, the Internet and Westwood Online. A built-in worldwide classification system will allow users to record their victories and defeats against others. The Worldwide Domination mode will let people compete in an ongoing war for global control.

Matrox G450 Announced - Seth Gecko
  • Matrox Graphics today announced the new 0.18-micron Matrox G450 2D, 3D and DVD graphics chip. The Matrox G450 AGP chip leverages Matrox G400 chip technology to integrate a digital transmitter, TV-out encoder, second RAMDAC and 64-bit DDR memory interface. Through integrating these components on the chip, the company has re-architectured its award-winning Matrox G400 graphics technology into a full-featured accelerator set to standardize DualHead technology. DualHead technology allows users to pair two screens as many as eight different ways.

This versatility is further enhanced with the Matrox G450?s Transmission-Minimized Differential Signaling transmitter, which outputs to a DVI-based digital panel. Business professionals using high-resolution analog monitors will also benefit from the chip?s 256-bit DualBus architecture. This architecture powers 2D graphics at resolutions as high as 2048x1536 in 32-bit color.

The Matrox G450 also supports DX7 environment-mapped bump mapping. Equipped with a 3D rendering array processor, the chip also powers a range of 3D gaming features, including stencil buffering, trilinear filtering, alpha-blending, anti-aliased vectors, vertex and table fogging, specular highlights, a 32-bit Z-buffer and more. The Charisma Engine combines a geometry engine with new techniques for animating 3D characters. The geometry engine supports full transformation, clipping and lighting at 30 million triangles per second. Charisma also supports character animation features such as advanced vertex texturing and frame interpolation to facilitate smooth movements and facial expressions.

Pixel Tapestry combines a rendering engine with a new set of 3D special effects. Featured will be a 1.5 gigatexels per second rendering engine as well as the ability to process up to three textures at the same time. The list of features will include: 3D texture support for new volumetric effects; all bump mapping effects such as emboss, dot product 3 and EMBM; hardware support for shadows; advanced pixel shader effects; and support for full scene, order-independent anti-aliasing.

Radeon 256 digital video features will include on-chip motion compensation, IDCT and MPEG acceleration. Consumer video applications such as DVD, DTV and digital VCR will all benefit from the chips' feature set. The ability to decode all the HDTV formats with reduced CPU utilization and run both analog and DVI digital high definition content without the need for external hardware, coupled with ATI's RAGE THEATER analog encoder-decoder chip, will provide a comprehensive solution.

Radeon 256 will support up to 128MB of double data rate SDRAM at up to 200MHz and use patented HyperZ technology to boost memory bandwidth more than 20 percent. As a result, Radeon 256 will be able to access 8GB per second of memory bandwidth. The chip will also include support for ATI's patented MAXX multi-ASIC technology, enabling twin Radeon 256 chips on a single graphics card. Support for all major graphics APIs, including DX7 and OpenGL 1.2, as well as all major operating systems, including Windows, Linux and Macintosh, will be included. Radeon 256 drivers will also be optimized for specific microprocessor instruction sets, including SSE and Itanium, as well as AMD's 3DNow!
