    Review - Allegiance (c) Microsoft - Lee Donowitz [ GO! ]

Fox Sports Closes Down - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Fox Interactive has discontinued its Fox Sports line due to the strain on production resources sports games impose.

According to Fox Interactive President Steven Birch, the company will shift its resources strictly to entertainment titles, continuing its marketing synergy with Fox's sister movie and television production.

Vice President Dave Neubecker explained the decision by pointing out that unlike with many entertainment titles, brand has relatively little effect on the popularity of sports titles. He added that the decision has nothing to do with developers Radical Entertainment and FarSight Studios, who will reportedly begin working with other publishers. Fox will continue to work with the developers on entertainment titles.

Q3A Mission Pack Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • iD Software has announced it's upcoming Quake 3 Arena mission pack. The expansion will include new skins, new weapons, new arenas and new play modes focusing on team play.

"This is the first mission pack developed by id Software since the Master Levels for Doom Pack. The focus of this mission pack is TEAM PLAY. Each tier consists of arenas designed for teamplay along with a final tournament arena. Players will team with bots for the single-player game, and with online counterparts for play over the Internet or LAN. This teamplay focus is apparent in every aspect of the game including map design, character design, user interface, additional gameplay types and AI development.

"Players will be able to select from different teams, each with their own logo and skin. There will be a new male and female model, each with a number of unique heads to represent a different team member.

"There will be at least three new game types (maybe more) in the mission pack (in addition to tournament mode and traditional CTF). Many of the game types can be played with team power-ups, which alter a player's health, weapon characteristics, armor, etc. One of the team power-ups is the Doubler, which increases a player's weapon damage by 2X. The power-up has no time limit and is active until the player dies -- it then re-spawns in the team base.

"We have included additional useable, carried items such as the Kamikaze, which, when detonated, gibs not only the carrier but any enemies in the massive blast radius.

"Enhancing the already lethal arsenal of weapons will be a new shotgun-type Nail Gun and a proximity mine launcher, to name only a couple of the new weapons.

"The user interface and menu system are being redesigned to complement the team play focus and facilitate team awareness and communication.

"Anyone who knows id, knows that the mission pack will be released when it's done. Any other speculation about features or release dates is only that speculation.

"This is just a taste of the great stuff that is included in the mission pack. We are very excited about the game and will be releasing more information as things are finalized. We will be showing the mission pack at E3 this year, so anyone attending the show is encouraged to stop by Activision's booth and have some fun playing the game.

Starsky & Hutch Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Empire Interactive today announced an agreement with Sony Pictures to publish a game based on the classic hit television series Starsky and Hutch. The game is scheduled to release worldwide on next-generation consoles and the PC in 2001. The TV show, a recognizable icon of the 1970s, was aired on ABC from 1975 to 1979. The show starred David Soul as the well-educated Hutch, Paul Michael Glaser as his more street-wise partner, and Antonio Fargas as Huggy Bear, friend and confidante. The other star of the show was the bright red hot-rod, a 1974 Ford Gran Torino, in which the duo raced around in hot pursuit of bad guys with tires screeching and rubber burning. Further announcements during E3 in May will include information on the game design, story and technical specifications.

GO Review: Allegiance - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • A pinch of tactical squadron-based real-time combat, one teaspoon strategy and one cup ambition. Stir for 15 minutes and you've got one heck of a pulse-pounding online space-action game in Allegiance. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Allegiance is a team game, so teamwork is the name of the game. There are all sorts of gameplay modes including Deathmatch, Property, Capture the Flag and Conquest, among others. One of the main gripes I had with Allegiance was the length of some of the epic battles. In fact, struggles better describes some of the games that lasted hours and hours. Allegiance takes a certain amount of patience sometimes, so gamers looking for a quick fix are unlikely to find it here. Allegiance was designed for gamers who enjoy a good amount of strategy to go along with their action. You can expect some games to last upwards of 4-5 hours in length if you've got squads that aren't too offensive in their tactics."

Be sure to check out the rest of our Allegiance review including an asteroid belt full of visuals. Enjoy!

GO Review: Evolva - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Grab a handful of popcorn, a tasty beverage and sit back in your best comfy chair as we begin our feature presentation, Evolva! Here's a blurb from our review:

"Have you ever walked into a movie theatre expecting a unique and interesting experience only to come out disappointed because the film didn't live up to it's potential? Evolva oozes with creativity and imagination but, like so many unique concepts before it, it fails to deliver or sustain a level of consistency and intrigue. The storyline is worthy of a science fiction film in itself, yet Evolva seems to settle for the old shoot 'em up formula. That's not to say that Evolva isn't a convincing gaming experience though, I mean heck, when I finished watching the science fiction thriller Pitch Black I was fairly satisfied, but I certainly wasn't itching to watch the movie a second time."

Be sure to check out the rest of our fantastic Evolva review including an beaker full of visuals. Enjoy!

Independence War II Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • A common occurence around this time of year, particularly with E3 coming up, is publishers and developers announcing new titles. For example today, Infogrames announced the development of a sequel to Independence War, entitled Independence War II: The Edge of Chaos. Developed by Particle Systems, the sequel will be created for the PC and Dreamcast.

As in the original, The Edge of Chaos will focus on the logistics and physics of a space simulator while incorporating an action/adventure element. Independence War II: The Edge of Chaos will soar into stores this winter. For more information, visit the official Independence War website.

Metal Fatigue is Gold - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Psygnosis has confirmed that their upcoming futuristic real-time strategy game Metal Fatigue has gone gold. Metal Fatigue was developed by Zono and will be the last title Psygnosis releases for the PC.

Psygnosis closes PC Operations - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Psygnosis has confirmed that they are in the process of shutting down its U.S. operations in preparation to become a console game developer for Sony. Poor returns for PC titles is the main reason in their decision, which will have large implications on their current slate of PC titles. The real-time strategy game Metal Fatigue will be the last title they release for the PC in the U.S. Other titles such as Hired Guns and Drakan II have been placed on hold indefinitely although it is believed that new publishers will be sought after for distribution of these products. Stay tuned for further details.

Free UT Maps Coming Soon - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Epic Games has announced that a set of new Unreal Tournament arenas are being released for free to the game's consumers. There are three Capture the Flag maps and three deathmatch levels in the pack that didn't quite make it in time to ship with Unreal Tournament. There is no set date for the release of these new maps at this time, although it is expected to be in the very near future. Stay tuned for more details.

Gothic Character Details - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • As Piranha Bytes and Egmont Interactive feverishly ready Gothic for a summer release, the game's monsters are roaring and clawing their way into the limelight. Over 25 different types of monsters divided into classes, bands and camps roam the Gothic world. Three separate, evolved classes of orcs have been developed to complicate life in the prison world. Gamers battle both the established prisoner hierarchy as well as defeat and outwit manipulative, dangerous monsters throughout the prison world.

Orcs appear in almost all fantasy RPGs, so fans are used to tolerating their brutal style of vulgar interference. In Gothic, there are three different castes of orcs: warriors, scouts and shamans. Warriors will be the biggest threat as they expend indiscriminate brute force in almost all of their interactions. An intelligent prisoner can outsmart them as they are the biggest, meanest and dumbest orcs. Scouts are smaller and less aggressive than warriors, but are smarter than all other orcs. Shamans are the spiritual leaders of the orcs and rule them in the Orc Caverns, mountainous hideouts in subterranean cities.

In addition to orcs, goblins have been woven into the complex social web of Gothic?s monsters. Goblins are a small, primitive race of deceptive, malicious monsters that cooperate with trolls and other monsters to defeat members of the prison world. Goblins live a simple life of thievery and consumption: they steal weapons and other valuable possessions and eat as much as possible.

Goblins are separated into two camps. One camp rambles throughout what is referred to as the upper world alone in search of loot or food; the other is intelligent enough to live in communities and live in secluded, protective caves. The second group travels and fights together, giving them a much greater chance of robbing and defeating their opponent. Both classes of goblins cooperate with larger, more threatening trolls and will sometimes even allow themselves to be used as weapons in altercations in exchange for small protections and favors. Because goblins are small, they need trolls to assist them in travel and conquest operations and are therefore subservient.

Gromada is Gold - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Bethesda Softworks has confirmed that their upcoming action title Gromada has gone gold and will ship to retail outlets in the coming weeks.

Gromada is a fast-paced, top-down action game pits players against planet-invading aliens in a non-linear campaign. The player has at their disposal a customizable tank complete with a variety of weaponry. Thanks to its skill settings and customized mission difficulty, Gromada will appeal to gamers of all ages and skill levels. The game will adjust the difficulty of each mission based on the player's performance in the previous mission(s).

Gromada also features high-resolution graphics that bring the planet's surface to life. The game comes alive with flora and fauna that can be destroyed by weapon fire and vehicle movement. Also included are spectacular special graphic effects, such as dynamic light sourcing, dramatic weapons fire, day and night lighting changes, and realistic explosions, smoke, and fire.

GO Review: Microsoft Baseball 2001 - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Walking confidently into the batter's box, Microsoft Baseball 2001 smashed the 1-1 pitch down the third base line, only to be called out at second base thanks to a running mistake. What you ask? Don't worry, it'll all make sense when you read the review and here's a little blurb:

"To top things off, I was able to sign Roberto Alomar, Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams with absolutely no difficulty. Why any or all of those players would jump at the opportunity to play for my Montreal Expos is beyond me, let alone the reason why they didn't re-sign with their respective clubs. It just wouldn't happen in real life, which puts an end to that realistic aspect of MS Baseball 2001. The computer doesn't manage opposing teams well at all. The icing on the cake comes when you realize that simulated games don't produce box scores. That's right, you have no way of knowing how well your players do on auto-played games. As if that wasn't enough, there's also no way of knowing what other teams do in terms of transactions, any kind of news page is absent altogether."

GO Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2000 - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • EA Sports steps up to the tee for yet another round of golf. This year's edition, featuring Tiger Woods among others, promptly pars the course. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Alright, so we've got a large assortment of courses and a new design utility, what else can we look forward too? How about a new computer? One of the biggest surprises coming out of this year's edition is the fact that Tiger Woods 2000 requires a massive system in order to run properly. If you don't own a Pentium II-450 or higher, you'll find yourself lowering the resolution to 640x480 just so you don't suffer from incredible lag. You can turn off all the bells and whistles in order to increase frame-rate, but I couldn't find a combination that allowed me to play at a reasonable pace. I was forced to lower the resolution to 800x600 despite the fact the game supports resolutions up to 1280x1064. I certainly hope this isn't a new trend for EA Sports titles because if there was one thing they excelled at previously, it was the fact that lower-end machines could always run their titles with reasonable success."

New GLSetup Released - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • A new version of GLSetup has been released. GLSetup is a tool to make setting up complicated video driver software. The program detects 3D graphics hardware and attempts to install the proper drivers.

The latest version of the program (1.0.0.114) adds new drivers for 3dfx Voodoo 2, 3dfx Voodoo 3 3500TV, 3dlabs Permedia 3 on Win98, Intel i810 and S3 Savage 2000 graphics cards. GO Review: Force Commander - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • In a galaxy far, far away... Force Commander is LucasArts' terrible attempt to bring the epic battles from the likes of The Empire Strikes Back to the PC. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"The camera interface is simply horrendous. The default view is what you might call a ground view. You see your units at eye level, which would be perfect if it wasn't for the fact this is a strategy game. The whole battlefield needs to be viewed, so why this is the default view is beyond me. The good news, you can view one-on-one confrontations up close and personal. The bad news, you'll lose the game if you do so. You can't watch a battle and partake in a war at the same time, and moving the camera in and out is a tedious task. What you'll probably end up doing is pulling the camera as far back as you possible can in order to view the entire battlefield, at which point you lose all detail whatsoever in the units themselves. There's no in-between in Force Commander and this is arguably the game's downfall."

GO Review: Mike Stewart's Bodyboarding - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Mike Stewart's Pro Bodyboarding has been available in Australia since last summer and finally makes it's International debut. Does the video game do the sport justice? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"If this game excels in one thing, it's fun. I literally spent hours a day playing on practice mode cruising along the wave busting out all kinds of airs. There is a decent list of tricks to perform on the waves including: cutback, el rollo, barrel rolls, ARS, reverse air, forward air, back flip, front flip, and a few other variants. The tricks are very simplistic and anyone can learn how to pull them off after a few tries. Unfortunately, the main modes of play really aren't that fun at all. Competition is horrible, you sit around until a swell comes up and paddle into the wave and then do tricks for points (trust me, its much more worse than it sounds). Arcade isn't interesting either if you're a real bodyboarder because it focuses more on point accumulation and avoiding obstacles."

Airfix Dogfighter Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Octagon Entertainment, in conjunction with Paradox Entertainment, is choosing and evaluating the ideal worldwide publisher for Airfix Dogfighter. Airfix Dogfighter is a 3D action game based on the popular Airfix plane models. The title is being developed for the PC and is scheduled for release Q3 2000.

In Airfix Dogfighter, you choose the kind of powerful, destructive model plane you could only dream of when you were young - making the flying noises and blowing stuff up. You take your heavily armed, well-armored plane to combat with enemy planes and tanks and destroy anything in your path - and some things that aren't. As you battle tanks, planes and enemy convoys, you must complete a plethora of difficult missions without bursting into flames and plummeting to the earth.

In a world that appears larger than life, your model plane comes to life to challenge enemies and carry out daring missions and lethal air battles throughout your own home. Unlike super-realistic flight sims, Airfix Dogfighter is heavily focused on recreating the world of hand-held dogfights - skewed unit designations and fixed landing gears. Mission objectives are based on achieving victory in WWII using one of a vast number of authentic WWII fighters. The game also includes a house editor feature whereby players can create their own multiplayer maps and logos for their airforces when they challenge others in multiplayer battles.

Airfix Dogfighter contains 20 levels for single-player combat plus ten multiplayer Death match arena maps. Up to 16 players can battle on a LAN or the Internet. Scheduled for release later this year, Airfix Dogfighter promises to take you back to the childhood we all miss - when you can destroy everything around you and someone must remind you to use your indoor voices.

The Rogue Spear add-on pack is a counter-terrorist team's worst nightmare: an urban setting. In Rogue Spear: Urban Operations, team Rainbow now faces its most dangerous missions yet with every stray bullet putting innocent lives at risk. Due to the public nature of these missions, the secrecy of the Rainbow organization is also at stake as the team fights against the most deadly terrorists the world has ever seen. Urban Operations includes new spaces with new game types for each one, all set in famous cities around the world.

In LucasArt's strategy offering, Force Commander, gamers take command of either the Empire or the Rebellion and field armies of the vehicles they know and love. Players can order TIE Bomber runs against Rebel bases, sortie snowspeeders against advancing Imperial armor, or lead a platoon of formidable AT-AT walkers to crush the Rebel resistance. Gamers must keep a level head and command their troops carefully, or they'll find their once-powerful forces left strewn and smoldering on a planet far, far away.

"Controls are very good, too - though I'm a bit disappointed with the thrust controls - I find the momentum effects are sort of messed up: as soon as you set the thrust to zero, the ship stops almost instantly, almost braking."

The Game is Dead. Long live the Game. - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Our latest editorial takes a look at the state of the Adventure Game genre and it's recent decline. Here's a little blurb from this great article:

"Adventure games, once the heart of computer gaming, as a genre, have died. The puzzle-solving simplistic interface of the past has been replaced by the 3D rendered, fast paced, twitchy games of the present. It is only fitting that we remember the heroes of our past, contrasting adventure gaming a decade ago, with that of today."
