The Game is Dead. Long live the Game. - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Our latest editorial takes a look at the state of the Adventure Game genre and it's recent decline. Here's a little blurb from this great article:

"Adventure games, once the heart of computer gaming, as a genre, have died. The puzzle-solving simplistic interface of the past has been replaced by the 3D rendered, fast paced, twitchy games of the present. It is only fitting that we remember the heroes of our past, contrasting adventure gaming a decade ago, with that of today."

GO Review: Triple Play 2001 - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Triple Play 2001 gives EA Sports' slogan, "If it's in the game, it's in the game", a whole new meaning. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"Player power-ups and targets the size of Jennifer Lopez's ass located just past the outfield wall! Oh that's right, if it's in the game, it's in the game! That's one slogan down the drain. Are you in the market for an over-the-top arcade baseball experience? The Triple Play series is probably right up your alley then, although I can't find many reasons to justify the 2001 edition over the 2000 edition. If it's a realistic baseball experience you're looking for then allow me to point you in the direction of High Heat Baseball 2001 and Microsoft Baseball 2001, you'll have better luck finding a real baseball game in those two titles."

GO Review: The Shadow of Death - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • The Shadow of Death continues the Heroes of Might & Magic III saga as the second expansion pack for the highly acclaimed strategy title. Could this be the ultimate expansion pack? Here's a little blurb from our review:

"So what does The Shadow of Death offer? It features extensive gameplay via 86 stand-alone missions and 14 campaigns, including the original Restoration of Erathia maps, 38 brand new single scenario maps and 7 Shadow of Death campaigns. If you've played Heroes of Might & Magic III but haven't tried the Armageddon's Blade expansion pack, you'll be treated to a number of new creatures. If you have played Armageddon's Blade, you'll be familiar with all combat units as well as the usual 16 hero classes and hundreds of structures. Unique to Shadow of Death are 8 special terrains, each with it's set of unique tactics. There are also 12 new combination artifacts to go with the 138 magical artifacts already available. Last but not least, the map and campaign editor have been upgraded with new features. So, pending your previous experience with the Heroes of Might & Magic III game, there's quite the number of features in The Shadow of Death."

Tachyon: The Fringe is Gold - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Novalogic has confirmed that their upcoming space combat game, Tachyon: The Fringe, has gone gold and is expected to ship to retail outlets in April.

Tachyon: The Fringe casts the player in the role of Jake Logan, a mercenary star fighter pilot who is framed and banished to the fringe of explored space. Jake works to rebuild his life, flying and fighting for the highest bidder, and soon finds himself caught in the middle of a war between an all-powerful mega-corporation known as GalSpan and the Bora rebels who settled the Fringe. As the game unfolds, the player will decide which jobs Jake will take, which fighters he'll fly, and how he'll outfit his fighters with weapons and system enhancements.

Emergency Rescue: Firefighters Announced - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • GT Interactive has announced Emergency Rescue: Firefighters, the sequel to Emergency: Firefighters for Life. Placing gamers in real-life situations and pitting them against one of nature's most unstoppable forces, Emergency Rescue challenges people to command and control 20 distinct engagements. In addition to battling four-alarm blazes in residential and commercial properties, Emergency Rescue features three training missions and pits users against a wide variety of fires, including those at an oil refinery, a logging camp, farms and more. Each engagement requires a different plan of action, meaning gamers will have to determine the best strategic approach. Emergency Rescue will be available this month for $19.99.

Don't remember the original Emergency: Figthers for Life? Then check out our review as seen in June of 1998. (Before we sported advertisements on the site, oh my!) It's good for a stroll down memory lane, if anything, and perhaps it'll wet your appetite for this upcoming sequel. Enjoy!

Tachyon: The Fringe for Free - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • The challenge to Novalogic was considerable: take Tachyon: The Fringe -- a space combat game that features gorgeous graphics; a deep single-player adventure; free, massive Internet multi-player action; and the unmistakable voice talent of sci-fi cult hero Bruce Campbell -- and find a way to make it even more attractive to PC gamers. The obvious answer was to offer it to them for free...so NovaLogic teamed with EarthLink, Inc. to do just that. Gamers who buy Tachyon between April 15 and July 31, 2000, are eligible to receive a full rebate of the game's purchase price when they subscribe to EarthLink's standard dial-up Internet service for at least three months.

GO Review: Shadow Watch - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • Red Storm's entry into the turn-based tactical strategy market, Shadow Watch, is a title full of unique ideas but weak on delivery. Here's a little blurb from our review:

"One of the highlights of Shadow Watch is its dynamic campaign generation. The game plays out over three separate cities, Rio de Janeiro, Baikonnur and Hong Kong. There are five missions per city with the climatic finale at a special locale. Within each city there are a number of possible subplots. Shadow Watch boasts 162 unique campaign possibilities with your particular path determined via interaction with particular contacts. Conversations with those specific contacts determine which missions will unfold and in which order. The problem is that this randomization ends up creating confusion in terms of the illogical and ever-changing subplots. Just when it seems like the army is behind the whole shindig, another contact will suddenly reveal a different subplot. What results is a series of subplots that just don't string together well to form a coherent story. By the time you reach the ending, the whole ordeal is as confusing as a David Cronenberg film."

GO Review: Might & Magic VIII - Jimmy Clydesdale
  • The Might & Magic series continues with Day of the Destroyer, the eighty installment that pretty well measures up to Troll poop! Here's a little blurb from our review:

"The Might & Magic series was once a rich and engulfing RPG experience. Today, it's about as rich and deep as troll poop. The Might & Magic series, as of late, makes the Tomb Raider series seem innovative. Personally, I liked Might & Magic VIII the first time I played it, when it was called Might & Magic VI. Oddly enough, we've seen three Might & Magic titles in the last three years. Why so long between each game? I don't know about you, but garbage pickup is once a week where I live. I've got a million of them folks and I'll be playing Vegas all week!"
